Prologue

The rain washed the blood from the pavement, but nothing could erase the image burned into my mind. Now, I'm locked in a gilded cage with a man whose name is a whisper of fear. Kian Valerius, the heir to the city's most ruthless mafia dynasty. His orders are clear: keep me silent. But the look in his eyes holds a question more dangerous than any gun.

The Witness

The rain fell in thick, icy sheets, blurring the neon signs of the city into weeping watercolors. Maya clutched the steering wheel of her delivery van, her knuckles white. The GPS had led her astray, deep into the industrial warehouse district, a labyrinth of shadows and silence that felt utterly alien after the warm, flour-dusted familiarity of her bakery.

She was about to turn around when a flicker of movement caught her eye. Not rats, but men. Figures gathered under the flickering light of a lone lamppost, their postures rigid, tense.

Curiosity, that fatal human flaw, made her slow down. And then she saw it.

A man was on his knees. The rain plastered his hair to his scalp, washed pale the dark stain spreading across his shirtfront. Towering over him was another man, his back to her. Broad-shouldered, encased in a long, dark coat that seemed to drink the light. He moved with a terrifying, economical grace.

Maya’s breath hitched. Her foot, of its own volition, slipped off the accelerator. The van rolled forward a few more feet.

The kneeling man said something, his voice a desperate, ragged plea lost in the downpour. The tall man tilted his head, a predator considering its prey.

Then, he raised his arm. There was no hesitation, no dramatics. Just the stark, final silhouette of a gun against the sickly yellow light.

A soft phut.

The kneeling man crumpled.

Maya’s hand flew to her mouth, stifling a scream. The sound was small, wet, impossibly loud in the sudden silence that followed the rain-muffled shot.

It was the wrong move.

The tall man turned. Slowly. As if he had all the time in the world. His face was cast in shadow, but she felt the weight of his gaze. It was like being pinned by a physical force, cold and absolute.

Panic seized her. She fumbled for the gear shift, her wet fingers slipping. The engine coughed, roared to life.

Too late.

Shadows detached themselves from the surrounding darkness. Two men materialized beside her van. One wrenched the driver's door open. A large, gloved hand closed around her arm, yanking her out into the chilling rain.

She stumbled, her knees buckling on the wet asphalt. She was dragged towards the circle of light, towards the body, towards Him.

He had taken a step closer. The lamplight now fell on his face.

He was younger than she expected. Maybe late twenties. His features were brutally elegant, carved from marble and ice. Dark hair, sharp jawline, a mouth set in a line of utter impassivity. But his eyes… they were the color of a winter storm, and they held a stillness that was more frightening than any fury.

He didn't speak. He simply looked at her, his gaze sweeping from her terrified face to the logo on her van – “The Daily Loaf” – then back to her eyes.

One of his men shoved her forward. She fell to her knees, the rough pavement scraping through her thin pants. The scent of rain, wet concrete, and the coppery tang of blood filled her nostrils, making her gag.

He moved then. A single, fluid step that brought the tips of his impeccably polished shoes into her line of sight. He crouched down, bringing himself to her level. The movement was silent, controlled. He smelled of gunpowder, expensive cologne, and the cold night air.

He didn't touch her. He just studied her, as if she were a strange insect he’d found.

“What did you see?” His voice was low, a rough whisper that rasped against her nerves. It wasn't loud. It didn't need to be.

Maya tried to speak, but only a whimper escaped. She shook her head, tears mixing with the rain on her cheeks.

He reached out. Not to hit her. He simply used the barrel of his silenced pistol to lift her chin, forcing her to meet his stormy eyes.

“Look at me,” he commanded, his voice still that deceptively soft rasp. “And understand this. You saw nothing. You heard nothing. Because if you did…” He paused, letting the implication hang in the air, heavier than the rain. “Your life, from this moment on, belongs to me.”

He stood up, turning his back on her as if she were no longer a threat. As if her fate was already sealed.

“Take her to the penthouse,” he said to his men, his tone now one of bored finality. He was already pulling on a fresh pair of black leather gloves, the act as ritualistic as a priest preparing for mass. “And get this cleaned up.”

As she was hauled to her feet and shoved towards a waiting black sedan, the last thing Maya saw was the man—Kian Valerius, though she didn't know his name yet—standing over the body, a dark king in a kingdom of shadows and rain. The gun in his hand was no longer a threat; it was a promise. A promise of the gilded cage that now awaited her.
