Chapter 12: The Devil's Handshake

The silence in her office after Mark left was deafening. Sophie’s hands trembled slightly, the adrenaline from the confrontation still coursing through her. He had shown his true face. There was no going back. The board meeting was a ticking clock, and Mark’s plan was in its final stages. She was outmanned, outgunned, and operating from a position of perceived weakness.

Her gaze fell on her wallet, lying on the desk. The plain white card with the etched phone number seemed to pulse with a malevolent energy. Daniel Carter. The enemy of her enemy. A man who respected strategy above loyalty. It was a pact with the devil. But what choice did she have? The high road led to professional annihilation and personal ruin.

With a sense of stepping off a cliff, she picked up her phone. Not her work phone, but a cheap, untraceable burner phone she had bought days ago, anticipating the need for absolute secrecy. Her fingers, cold and steady, dialed the number.

It rang twice before a calm, expectant voice answered. "Carter."

"It's Sophie Miller." She didn't waste words. "You suggested a discussion about blind spots. The time for discussion is now."

There was a brief pause, then a soft chuckle. "I admire your directness, Sophie. I assume this line is secure?"

"It is. And I assume you're recording this?" she countered, her voice icy.

"Perceptive. But unnecessary. I prefer to operate on mutual self-interest, not blackmail. What do you propose?"

Sophie took a deep breath, laying her cards on the table. "Mark's plan is to sabotage my board presentation, tank the stock, and facilitate your takeover. He's promised you my head on a platter and a compliant, broken wife. But you and I both know a broken company led by a man who betrays his own partners is a bad investment."

"Go on," Daniel said, his interest palpable.

"I'm proposing a different outcome. You still get your acquisition. But you get it with a functioning company, a stabilized stock price, and a COO who knows the value of the asset and how to run it. You get me. Not as a victim, but as an ally. In exchange, you give me the evidence you have on Mark's sabotage. I'll handle Mark. You get a clean company, and I get my life back."

The silence on the other end was long and heavy. She could almost hear the gears turning in his brilliant, ruthless mind. He was weighing the value of a clean victory against the satisfaction of crushing her.

"An intriguing proposal," he said finally. "But why would I trust you? You have a rather personal stake in this."

"Because my stake is what makes me reliable," she shot back. "My survival depends on this company's success. Mark's survival depends on its failure. Who is the more predictable partner? And let's be clear, Daniel. This isn't about trust. It's about calculus. My math is better than his."

There was another pause, then a decisive click. "Very well. There's a private lounge at the Ashworth Hotel. Room 12B. One hour. Come alone." The line went dead.

Sophie sat back, her heart hammering. She had done it. She had thrown the dice. An hour later, she walked into the discreet, wood-paneled lounge. Daniel was already there, a folder on the table in front of him.

He didn't offer pleasantries. He slid the folder across the table. "Everything you need. Email trails, financial transfers, recordings of him outlining the plan. Enough to bury him."

Sophie opened the folder. The evidence was overwhelming, damning. A cold fury mixed with a profound sense of relief washed over her. She looked up at Daniel. "What's your price?"

"Your resignation, after a six-month transition period to ensure stability," he said smoothly. "And your silence on my... earlier negotiations with your husband."

So that was it. He got to wash his hands of the whole sordid affair. He would emerge as the savior of the company, while she and Mark destroyed each other.

Sophie looked at the evidence in her hands, then at the man who had been willing to ruin her for profit. There were no heroes in this room. Only survivors. She stood up, tucking the folder under her arm.

"It's not a deal," she said, her voice cold as steel. "It's a temporary alliance. Don't mistake this for forgiveness."

A slow smile spread across Daniel's face. "I'd expect nothing less. Good luck, Sophie. It seems we're both playing the long game now."

She walked out of the hotel, the folder feeling like a weapon in her hands. She had made a deal with the devil. But for the first time since this nightmare began, she held all the cards. The endgame had just begun.
