Skye’s POV

"What kind of situation?" Adrian asked, already turning the vehicle in the direction she indicated.

"It's better if you see for yourselves," she replied cryptically, climbing into another vehicle with Marcus at the wheel.

We followed them toward the eastern border of our territory, taking the familiar route that led to the lake where I'd experienced my first shift. As we drew closer, a pungent odor began to permeate the vehicle—the unmistakable stench of decay made worse by the desert heat.

When we rounded the final bend in the road, the source of the smell became horrifyingly clear. The once-pristine shoreline was littered with dozens of animal carcasses—deer, rabbits, coyotes, and various desert creatures lay bloated and rotting under the merciless sun. Dark clouds of flies swarmed around the remains, the buzzing audible even from inside our vehicle.

I clapped a hand over my mouth and nose, my stomach lurching violently at the grotesque scene.

Adrian brought the SUV to an abrupt halt, his knuckles white on the steering wheel as he surveyed the carnage before us. The peaceful lake where I'd first embraced my wolf had been transformed into a nightmarish tableau of death.

"What happened here?" Adrian demanded, his voice tight with controlled rage as we exited the vehicle.

I stumbled out after him, the stench hitting me with physical force. My hand flew to my nose, desperately trying to block the overwhelming odor of decomposition. Despite my efforts, I felt my stomach heave, and I turned away, struggling to control the nausea that threatened to overcome me.

Around us, the once pristine shoreline where I had experienced the joy of my first shift was now desecrated, transformed into a gruesome tableau of death. The contrast between that beautiful memory and the current horror was almost more than I could bear.

What could have caused such widespread death? And why here, of all places—at Oasisborn's primary water source?

As I looked at Adrian's face, I could see he was thinking the same things. His expression had hardened, anger clear in his eyes. Someone had violated his territory, and he wouldn't let it stand.

Lydia, already examining one of the carcasses with gloved hands, looked up at Adrian's approach. Her eyes above her mask were grim.

"These animals didn't die naturally," she stated, her voice clinical despite the horrific surroundings. "I've examined several of them. They were poisoned, then driven here."

"Poisoned?" Nadia echoed, her face contorting with fury as she connected the dots. "Someone deliberately contaminated our water source."

Lydia nodded, carefully placing the small creature she'd been examining back on the ground. "The toxin is sophisticated—something I haven't encountered before. It appears to cause extreme thirst before death, driving the animals to seek water."

"It's Gravestone Pack," Nadia declared, her voice hardening with certainty. "I'll gather our warriors immediately. We should strike before they can—"

"No," Lydia interrupted, holding up a hand to stop Nadia's brewing tirade. "I've found no evidence pointing specifically to Gravestone or any other pack. The poison leaves no scent signature I can identify. If you confront Kane without proof, you'll only give him justification to retaliate openly."

"So we just do nothing?" Ryder demanded, gesturing angrily at the desecrated lake. "Let them poison our water and walk away?"

Adrian had remained silent throughout this exchange, his amber eyes surveying the damage with calculated intensity. Now he stepped forward, his voice carrying the calm authority that always emerged in crisis.

"Our first priority is the pack's safety," he stated firmly. "We need to clear these carcasses, purify the water if possible, and preserve samples as evidence." He turned to Lydia. "Can you determine how long the water will remain contaminated?"

She shook her head slightly. "Not without further testing. I'll need to take samples back to my laboratory."

Adrian nodded, pulling out his phone. His fingers moved swiftly across the screen as he made a call. When Venus answered, his voice was steady and clear.

"Venus, activate the reserve water supply. Yes, immediately. Restrict all lake water usage until further notice." He paused, listening. "Good. Update the pack council in one hour."

As he ended the call, he looked slightly less grim. "Venus had the foresight to establish a water reservoir last year. We have enough clean water in reserve to last the pack at least a week."

"Your planning saved us again," Nadia acknowledged, some of her anger giving way to grudging appreciation.

Adrian turned to Lydia. "Prepare protective gear. We need to remove these carcasses and burn them in the desert, far from our territory." He glanced at Marcus, who had remained silent throughout the exchange. "Organize a disposal team. I'll join you."

"I'll help too," I said, stepping forward despite the nausea still churning in my stomach.

"No need," Adrian and Ryder responded simultaneously, their voices overlapping in rare agreement.

I straightened my shoulders, meeting Adrian's concerned gaze directly. "I'm a warrior of Oasisborn now. This is my responsibility too." I gestured toward the lake, pushing aside the memories of my first shift that this place held. "I want to help restore it."

After a moment's hesitation, Adrian nodded, something like pride flickering in his eyes before his expression returned to its determined focus.

An hour later, I found myself dressed in a protective hazmat suit, gloves sealed at the wrists with tape, and a filtration mask covering my nose and mouth. Despite these precautions, the stench remained overwhelming as we worked to clear the shoreline, dragging bloated carcasses into the backs of trucks for transportation to a remote burn site.

I'd worked all sorts of odd jobs over the years, even played a zombie in a movie once, but I swear this was the most disgusting work I'd ever done.

Right now, I wanted nothing more than to chop off Kane's head and burn it along with these carcasses!
