Genius Kids' Scheme: Claiming Daddy's Billionaire Empire Chapter 246: Starlight Confessions
"So? What's the first thing you want to do?" Irene asked, her hand hovering over the pad she'd just removed from Adam's arm.
Adam caught her gaze, his eyes dark with an intensity that made her pulse quicken. His lips curved into that rare, genuine smile she'd come to treasure.
"That's something I'll show you, not tell you. When the time comes."
The promise in his words charged the air between them. He hadn't directly answered, but his meaning couldn't have been clearer if he'd spelled it out in neon lights.
Irene busied herself with the treatment equipment, praying he couldn't hear her heart hammering against her ribs. "Keeping secrets now? Let's go see what the kids are up to."
The sunset painted the sky in fiery oranges as they strolled along the beach walkway. Alex pushed Adam's wheelchair with careful attention, while Lucas and Lily raced ahead, pointing at seagulls diving for their dinner.
"Mom, look!" Lucas suddenly yelled, pointing toward a crowd gathered around a small stage. "Something's happening!"
All three children turned to Irene, eyes gleaming with unmistakable hope.
"Go check it out," Irene laughed. "Just don't disappear on me."
The crowd parted as they approached. A host with too much energy was working the tourists through a microphone. "Who's ready for our Island Challenge? Winners get dinner vouchers for the Moonlight Bay!"
Lucas's hand shot up like a rocket. "Us! We'll do it!"
The host grinned, glancing between Irene and Adam. "Your kids have amazing energy! If they win, you and your husband can enjoy a romantic dinner."
Irene opened her mouth to correct him but hesitated. The triplets had already bolted toward the stage, practically buzzing with excitement.
Adam caught her eye. "Let them have their fun."
On stage, the host explained the rules. "Teams will carry balloons between their necks in a relay race. Fastest team wins!"
"But there are three of us," Lily pointed out, her forehead creasing.
"No problem," the host assured them. "You'll just need to complete all balloon exchanges."
The triplets lined up with perfect teamwork. Alex and Lucas positioned the first balloon between their necks, then Lucas and Lily took the second leg, with Lily finally returning to Alex to complete the circuit. They moved like they'd practiced this a hundred times.
The crowd cheered as they finished way ahead of everyone else. Irene felt a surge of pride watching her children jump around in celebration. She glanced at Adam and caught him watching the triplets with unmistakable fondness.
"Mom! We crushed it!" Lucas bounded toward them, waving the prize vouchers like he'd won Olympic gold.
Irene read the fancy text: "Moonlight Bay - Couple's Dining Experience."
"Wait, this isn't for the whole family?" she asked, confused.
The host, who'd followed the excited children, explained. "Moonlight Bay is our couples-only spot. Perfect for a romantic evening."
The triplets traded looks that weren't subtle at all. Alex pushed his glasses up, the picture of fake innocence. "Mom, you should go with Uncle Adam."
"Yes!" Lily jumped in immediately. "Thomas can watch us, right Thomas?"
Thomas nodded, barely hiding his smile. "I'd be happy to spend time with these champions."
"But—" Irene started.
"Mom," Lucas cut in, suddenly serious. "We won this fair and square! Don't you want a break from us for once?"
Irene looked helplessly at Adam, hoping for an escape, but found him watching her with something unreadable in his eyes.
"Fine," she surrendered softly. "Since you worked so hard for it."
Adam's lips curved upward, satisfaction written all over his face.
The following evening, golden light danced across the water as Irene pushed Adam's wheelchair along the wooden walkway. Her white sundress caught the breeze, her hair flowing loose around her shoulders.
"What trouble are the kids getting into tonight?" Adam asked, his voice lighter than she'd ever heard back home.
"Thomas is taking them on some treasure hunt, then an outdoor movie," Irene smiled. "They're bouncing off the walls."
"I wish I'd had that growing up," Adam said quietly.
Irene glanced down. "No beach vacations as a kid?"
Adam shook his head. "Haven family vacations meant sitting in different meeting rooms in different cities."
Without thinking, she squeezed his shoulder gently. "Well, you're making up for lost time."
Adam looked up, his eyes warm. "Yes, I am."
"Oh!" Irene laughed suddenly. "Alex went full travel agent today. Lily wouldn't stop talking about some lookout point. According to her, we absolutely have to see it because 'the view will blow your mind!'"
Adam chuckled. "Seems they've planned our entire vacation."
"They're more invested in this trip than we are," Irene shook her head. "Little matchmakers."
A comfortable silence settled between them as they watched the waves roll in. Away from Silver City's judgmental eyes, beyond their roles as doctor and patient, they were simply two people enjoying the sunset.
The restaurant sat on a cliff edge, with glass walls showing the moonlit bay below. Soft lighting created cozy spots, and tables were spaced just right for privacy.
"Welcome to Moonlight Bay," their server said, leading them to a window table. "Our best spot, with the perfect view."
Adam glanced at Irene. "Do you want to order, or...?"
"I'll have whatever you're having," she finished with a smile, surprised by how easily they'd fallen into this rhythm.
When their food arrived, Adam studied her. "The kids really adore you."
Irene blinked, caught off guard. "What made you think of that?"
"It's how they look at you," he said, watching her closely. "That kind of trust doesn't come easy. You must be an amazing mom."
Warmth spread through her chest. "They're my whole world... Even when raising them alone has been tough, it's made me stronger."
"They're exceptional," Adam's eyes never left hers. "Just like you."
Heat rushed to Irene's cheeks. She glanced around at the surrounding tables with their candles and flowers, suddenly aware that this was, undeniably, a date. What surprised her most was how right it felt.
After dinner, their server brought a beautiful colorful drink with mint leaves and tiny star-shaped garnishes floating on top.
"Our special 'Starlight Wish,'" the server explained warmly. "Island legend says when two people share this drink, their hearts grow closer."
After the server left, Adam studied the drink before looking up at Irene, his gaze both challenging and gentle. "Want to try it?"
Irene met his eyes, her heart racing. She knew that behind this simple question lay something much deeper...
