Scarred Wolf Queen Chapter 23
**Briony's POV**
Dead leaves crunched beneath my feet as I walked through Silver Pines. The night wind cut through the branches, but I barely felt the cold.
I'd finally done it - told them everything. Yet instead of feeling relieved, I felt hollow. Empty. Like I'd ripped out something vital and left it burning in that fire behind me.
My wolf stayed quiet.
I heard footsteps crunching through pine needles behind me. I walked faster. I'd already given them my truth. What more could they want?
"Bri, wait." Noah's voice called out from behind. I could hear Layla's lighter footsteps alongside his.
I stopped but didn't turn around, wrapping my arms around myself.
"I've said enough tonight, Noah. I just need some space."
"I know," he said, getting closer. "But I need to tell you... I'm sorry."
I kept my back to him, afraid I'd fall apart if I turned around.
"I should have noticed. I should have been there." His voice cracked. "As your brother, I failed you."
"It's done, Noah. That's just how things are." I blinked back tears.
Layla moved beside me, her face gentle in the moonlight. "I know you need time, Bri. We'll give you that. But first, let us say what we need to."
Noah moved in front of me, eyes wet. "Starting tomorrow, everything changes. I swear I'll - "
"Don't," I cut him off. "Don't make promises you won't keep. Don't say things out of shock that you'll forget when you're back with your friends."
"You're wrong." Noah held my face, forcing me to look at him. "It won't fade this time. I'm not letting you face anything alone again."
The intensity in his eyes made my chest hurt.
"I love you, Bri. I always have. I just didn't know how to fight Dad's rules. But I don't care anymore. You matter more than any stupid tradition."
I felt my walls crumbling. Noah hugged me, and I stood frozen.
He kissed my forehead before stepping back. Layla moved forward and gave me a quick kiss on the cheek, squeezing my hand.
"Take all the time you need," she whispered. "We'll be with you when you're ready."
I nodded, unable to speak past the lump in my throat. They gave me one more look before letting me go.
I'd only walked a few minutes when a shadow stepped out from the trees. Benjamin stood in the moonlight, face serious as always.
"I owe you an apology too." His hands were in his pockets, but his eyes showed strong emotions.
"Benjamin, you don't have to - "
"No, I need to say this." He moved closer. "I should have seen it. I know what darkness looks like. But I ignored your pain because seeing it meant facing my own failure."
"You're braver than any of us, Briony." He gently took my wrist, touch careful like I might break. "Far braver."
Ethan appeared from the shadows, looking unusually serious.
"I thought I noticed everything," he said with a sad smile. "But I missed what was right in front of me. Tiny, I'm sorry for not seeing what you were going through."
"What are you doing?" I asked, confused.
"Accepting you as one of us," Ethan said simply. "Should've happened a long time ago."
Benjamin leaned down and placed a gentle kiss on my cheek, breathing in deeply. Ethan did the same on my other cheek, all his usual joking gone.
I continued walking, feeling a bit lighter. The weight was still there, but not just on my shoulders anymore.
As I neared the pack house, two more figures appeared in the moonlight. Maxwell and Christopher stood waiting, faces serious.
"Bri," Maxwell said quietly. "Can we talk?"
"I'm beat. Just want to go home." I sighed.
"We get it," Christopher said, "but we can't let you walk away after everything we've learned."
"Tell us what to do," Maxwell stepped closer. "We need to make this right."
"This isn't a quick fix. It's everywhere in our pack. One heart-to-heart won't change anything." I gave them a tired smile.
"Then we'll change the whole system," Maxwell said firmly. "As future Alphas, we can do that."
"Before you start your big reform," I said, "think about how many others are suffering. Think about wolves without Beta blood, who can't defend themselves like I can."
I looked them in the eyes. "Help them before trying to save me."
"We will," Christopher promised, "but we're not giving up on you. You're part of us whether you like it or not."
"Do you want to leave Polaris?" Maxwell asked suddenly, pain crossing his face. "Is that your plan?"
I paused before answering quietly: "If you were me, would you stay? In a place full of bad memories, with a family that never wanted you?"
"Please let me leave," I whispered. "Tonight's been enough."
Maxwell stepped aside, but Christopher caught my arm.
"Not until we finish," he said softly, then performed the same action, lips touching my temple as he breathed in.
Maxwell followed, his kiss on my forehead lingering longer, breath deeper.
I walked home in silence, my mind too full to process everything. When I got to the house, I went straight to the bathroom and locked the door.
Hot water hit my skin as tears flowed silently down my face. I wasn't sure if this was letting go or just giving up. Maybe both.
**Benjamin's POV**
We gathered around the dying fire. The silence was crushing. Noah sat with his head in his hands. Ethan paced back and forth. Layla sat alone at the edge, eyes wet with tears.
Maxwell and Christopher joined us last, looking worse than when they'd left. We formed a silent circle around the fading embers.
"She plans to leave." Christopher finally spoke, his voice tight. "First chance she gets, she's leaving Polaris."
"We can't let that happen." I spoke first. "I get how she feels, but running isn't the answer."
"Can you blame her?" Layla fired back. "After what she's been through? I'd have run ages ago."
"No, I don't blame her," I said. "But this is her home. She shouldn't have to leave. The system needs to change, not her place in it."
"I agree with Ben," Maxwell nodded, "but that takes time. Until then, we need to keep her safe."
"We need more info," Ethan said. "She wouldn't name names, but there are other ways to find out."
"It's not just the bullies," Noah finally spoke. "It's who's backing them. Nobody targets the Beta's kid unless they have protection."
"The school board," Layla said suddenly. "She mentioned board members stepping in, firing teachers who tried to help. That's not random."
"We need my father on this," Maxwell decided. "We need the Alpha involved."
"But Bri doesn't want that," Christopher worried. "She doesn't want anyone to know."
"Because she's afraid of payback," I realized. "But if the Alpha steps in, nobody would dare touch her."
"Let's talk to my father tonight," Maxwell said. "He'll still be up."
"We tell him everything," Christopher added. "No holding back."
I stared into the dying embers, thinking about Briony and how she'd changed in our lives.
*Once, she was just background noise, a shadow at training. Now she's suddenly essential. Why? Because of those scars? The pain she carries?*
*Or because we finally see her for what she is - the girl guarding the pack from shadows, never complaining, never asking for help.*
"We're going to show her," I said suddenly. "Show her she's worth caring for, worth protecting. Make her see this pack isn't just pain and neglect. It can be home."
