The Taste of Freedom

The coffee appeared on the corner of her worktable the next morning. It was in a simple ceramic mug, not the disposable cup that usually accompanied her meals. The rich, dark aroma of a properly brewed espresso cut through the familiar scents of ink and solvent.

Evelyn stared at it. She hadn't asked for it. She hadn't asked for anything.

Alessandro was across the room, examining a sheet of her completed work under the magnifying lamp. He didn't look at her. "You take it black," he stated, his tone matter-of-fact. "No sugar."

A cold prickle ran down her spine. How did he know that? She thought of the agents who had ransacked her studio, the invasive inventory of her life. He must have read the report. It was a reminder that he knew everything about her, a calculated move to unnerve her. And it was working.

Yet, the gesture itself was… a small kindness. A paradox. A predator offering a moment of comfort to its prey.

Cautiously, she picked up the mug. The heat seeped into her cold fingers. She took a sip. It was perfect. Bitter and strong, exactly how she liked it. For a fleeting second, with her eyes closed, she could almost imagine she was in her own studio, taking a morning break, the city humming with life outside her window instead of silent menace.

When she opened her eyes, he was watching her. The intensity of his gaze made her stomach flip. He had abandoned the magnifier and was leaning against the table, arms crossed.

"You moved here from Boston," he said, not a question but an invitation to a conversation she didn't want to have. "For the art scene?"

She set the mug down, the spell broken. "For my brother. Better doctors." She kept her answers short, factual. Don't give him anything.

He nodded slowly, his eyes never leaving her face. "Family is a complicated debt."

The way he said 'debt' made it sound like a life sentence. Which, for her, it was.

Later that day, Don Valeri made one of his rare, unsettling visits. He was displeased with the pace. His voice, a low rumble, filled the studio as he pointed a thick finger at the ledger.

"This is taking too long. The Grimaldis are getting restless. We need this in play." His gaze fell on Evelyn, sharp and impatient. "Perhaps you need more motivation."

Before she could even process the threat, Alessandro spoke from the shadows where he'd been standing.

"The work is flawless, Don Valeri," he said, his voice calm but firm. "Rushing it now would be the mistake. The Grimaldis will be restless until they're in the ground. A few more days for perfection is a strategic investment, not a delay."

The Don turned his glare to his second-in-command. The air crackled with a sudden, silent power struggle. Evelyn held her breath, her fate hanging in the balance between these two dangerous men.

After a tense moment, Don Valeri grunted, the sound conceding the point but not the authority. "A few days, Alessandro. No more." He shot one last, ominous look at Evelyn before storming out, his entourage trailing him.

The silence he left behind was thick and heavy.

Elessandro didn't look at her. He walked to the window, staring out at the walled-in garden. "He's a man who sees problems as nails," he said, his back to her. "And his only tool is a hammer."

It was the most personal thing he'd ever said to her. A criticism, however veiled, of his Don. A crack in the armor of absolute loyalty.

Why was he telling her this? Was it a test? A trap?

She said nothing, just watched the rigid line of his shoulders. The protector and the jailer, all in one enigmatic, infuriating package.

He finally turned, his expression once again a mask of cool detachment. But the moment had happened. The line between them had blurred, just a little.

He picked up the empty coffee mug from her table, his fingers brushing against hers where they rested on the wood.

The contact was electric. A jolt of something hot and startling shot up her arm. She snatched her hand back as if burned.

His eyes met hers, and for a single, heart-stopping second, she saw something flash in their gray depths—surprise, maybe, or recognition of the same shocking current. Then it was gone, shuttered away behind a wall of ice.

He didn't apologize. He didn't acknowledge it. He simply took the mug and walked out of the room.

Evelyn was left alone, the ghost of his touch tingling on her skin. The taste of coffee was still on her tongue, a bitter reminder of a small comfort that felt more dangerous than any outright threat. He was getting under her skin. And that was a vulnerability she couldn't afford.

The cage was the same. The guards were the same. But the air she breathed inside it had just become infinitely more complicated.
