The Last Breath Chapter 9

The details of how Mom, Dad, and the villagers escaped were told to me afterward.

At the time, after hearing news of the fire, all I knew was that everyone vanished through the doorway in a flash, leaving me alone in the room.

The lights went out without warning. Cold darkness took over again. Then Grandma appeared—silent, without that black mass wrapped around her.

After two days in the coffin, Grandma had taken human form. She appeared instantly at the bedside, wearing a burial shroud, face covered with maggots, mouth stretched in that blood-red smile—nothing about her looked human.

I had no burial shroud, no wrinkles drawn on my face, no coffin nails on the bed. Grandma no longer needed to ask me "who are you."

I wanted to scream, to call for help. They hadn't gone far—the living were still close.

The moment this thought formed in my mind, Grandma grabbed my throat. More than a hand, it was like a foot—Grandma's nails were sharp and pointed. I felt blood flowing down my neck. The coarse hair on her hand was hard and stiff, stabbing me with unbearable pain.

From a festive atmosphere to confronting a ghost—just a few minutes. My brain couldn't handle such a drastic change. My consciousness crashed again.

Unfortunately, feces and urine couldn't save me a second time.

Grandma grabbed my throat and leaped out the door, over the west wall. I felt weightless, my feet never touching ground, not knowing if I was alive or dead.

The old house was the first in the village. Beyond the wall was the back mountain—no resources, unsuitable for farming, worthless. The back mountain was actually a desolate hill no one cared about.
