The Phoenix Conspiracy Chapter 3

The sterile corridor stretched endlessly before Aris, its fluorescent lights humming like a swarm of insects. She pressed her palm against the cold wall, her breath coming in short, uneven gasps. The weight of Carter’s words pressed down on her chest—*bioweapon, genetic key, Project Phoenix*—each syllable a hammer blow to the fragile reality she thought she knew.

Behind her, the briefing room door hissed open. She didn’t need to turn to know it was Alexei. His presence was like a shadow, always just a step behind, always watching.

"You can’t run from this," he said, his voice low.

Aris clenched her fists. "I’m not running. I’m *thinking*."

A bitter laugh escaped her. Thinking. As if logic could untangle the nightmare she’d been thrown into. Her parents—brilliant, quiet, *dead*—had left her a legacy written in blood and DNA. And now she was supposed to believe they’d designed her as some kind of living weapon?

Alexei moved closer, his boots silent on the polished floor. "Chimera won’t stop. Not until they have you."

She whirled on him. "Then tell me *why*! If I’m so damn important, why didn’t anyone warn me before I got kidnapped? Why am I just now hearing about this *now*?"

His jaw tightened. For the first time, she saw a crack in his armor—a flicker of something raw beneath the cool detachment. "Because we didn’t know they’d found you," he admitted. "Not until it was almost too late."

Aris exhaled sharply, her shoulders sagging. The adrenaline was fading, leaving her hollow. "What do they want with me?"

Alexei hesitated, then reached into his jacket. He pulled out a small holodisk and activated it. A three-dimensional scan of her DNA helix materialized between them, the same golden anomaly pulsing at its core.

"This," he said, pointing to the glowing segment. "The Phoenix Marker. It’s not just a genetic quirk—it’s a *key*. One that can activate or deactivate Project Phoenix."

She stared at the projection, nausea rising in her throat. "And Chimera wants to use it to... what? Start a war?"

"Worse," Alexei said grimly. "They want to *remake* the world. Handpick who lives and who dies based on genetic purity."

The words hung in the air like poison. Aris swallowed hard. "And Aegis?"

"We contain the threat. By any means necessary."

She studied his face—the sharp angles, the scars she hadn’t noticed before, the way his eyes darkened when he spoke of Chimera. There was history there. *Personal* history.

Before she could ask, an alarm blared through the corridor. Red lights flashed along the ceiling.

Alexei’s hand went to his ear, his expression hardening. "Jenna. Report."

Static crackled over his comm. "*Perimeter breach—south entrance. They’re inside.*"

Aris’s pulse spiked. "Who’s inside?"

Alexei grabbed her arm, already moving. "Chimera."

---

The safe house descended into chaos.

Aris stumbled after Alexei as he led her through a maze of corridors, his grip iron-tight. Shouts and gunfire echoed through the halls, punctuated by the occasional explosion that rattled the walls.

"They found us *fast*," she panted.

Alexei didn’t slow. "They must have tracked your biometrics when we scanned you."

Guilt twisted in her gut. She’d brought this on them.

They rounded a corner and nearly collided with Jenna, her rifle raised. "East wing’s compromised," she snapped. "We need to move *now*."

Alexei nodded. "Evac protocol?"

"Garage. Marcus is prepping the car."

Aris barely had time to process before Jenna shoved a pistol into her hands. The metal was cold, unfamiliar.

"I don’t know how to use this," Aris said.

Jenna’s smile was razor-thin. "Point and shoot. Survival’s a great teacher."

Another explosion rocked the building. The ceiling groaned, dust raining down.

"Go!" Jenna barked, already turning to cover their retreat.

Alexei pulled Aris forward, his strides eating up the distance. The garage was just ahead—a dimly lit space filled with armored vehicles. Marcus stood beside an idling sedan, his face pale under the flickering lights.

"Get in!" he yelled.

They were ten feet away when the wall exploded.

Aris screamed as debris flew, the force knocking her off her feet. She hit the ground hard, pain lancing up her side. Through the dust, she saw figures clad in black tactical gear pouring through the breach—Chimera operatives, their masks gleaming under the emergency lights.

Alexei was on his knees, blood streaking his temple. He raised his gun and fired, dropping two attackers before they could advance.

"Aris! *Move!*"

She scrambled toward him, her hands scraping against broken concrete. A bullet whizzed past her ear, close enough to singe her hair.

Then Marcus was there, hauling her up and shoving her toward the car. "Go, go, *go*!"

Alexei covered them, his shots precise, deadly. But there were too many.

Aris reached the car, her fingers fumbling with the door. Marcus dove into the driver’s seat, the engine roaring to life.

"Alexei!" she screamed.

He turned just as a Chimera operative lunged at him. The man’s knife flashed—a wicked silver arc—and sank into Alexei’s side.

Aris’s breath stopped.

Alexei staggered, but his hand shot out, catching the operative’s wrist. With a brutal twist, he snapped the man’s arm, then drove his elbow into his throat. The operative crumpled.

But more were coming.

"*Alexei!*"

He met her eyes across the distance. For a heartbeat, she saw something raw in his gaze—regret, resolve, something deeper she couldn’t name. Then he turned and fired again, buying them time.

Marcus grabbed her arm. "We have to leave *now*!"

"No! We can’t just—"

The decision was made for her. A Chimera grenade rolled into the garage.

Marcus swore and hit the gas. The car screeched forward as the world behind them erupted in flames.

Aris twisted in her seat, her throat tight. Through the smoke, she saw Alexei’s silhouette—standing, fighting, *alone*—before the fire swallowed him whole.

---

The car tore through London’s streets, Marcus weaving through traffic with reckless precision. Aris clutched the seat, her knuckles white, her mind replaying the last moments in the garage.

*Alexei.*

"They’ll extract him," Marcus said, as if reading her thoughts. "Aegis doesn’t leave their own behind."

She wanted to believe him. But the image of that knife sinking into Alexei’s side wouldn’t leave her.

"Where are we going?" she asked, her voice hollow.

Marcus exhaled. "Geneva. Dr. Petrova’s waiting."

Aris closed her eyes. Another name from her past—Lena Petrova, her mother’s oldest friend, a woman she hadn’t seen since the funeral.

The car sped on, carrying her toward answers she wasn’t sure she wanted.

And farther away from the man who’d thrown himself into fire to save her.
