The Silent Witness Chapter 5

Everyone around him pressed closer, desperate to see what was on the screen.

But Mr. Reed suddenly snapped back to awareness and hurled the phone to the ground.

Crack. The case flew off. The screen shattered into a spiderweb of cracks.

Everyone froze.

Mr. Reed was breathing hard, his eyes bloodshot, like he'd just suffered a terrible shock.

Then he charged at me again, kicking my already injured body viciously.

"This is all your fault! All because of you!"

He kicked me repeatedly, his voice filled with despair.

"How could my daughter have been so blind? How could she have gotten involved with someone like you?"

I curled up tighter, barely able to make a sound.

Mrs. Reed picked up the phone, curious. But the moment she saw what was on it, her face drained of color. Her whole body began to shake.

Then she grabbed a large rock from the ground, her eyes wild, and raised it above my head.

"Jason! I'm going to kill you! You monster!"

Her voice was hoarse, her eyes filled with murderous intent.

I wanted to move, but every shift sent agony through my body. All I could do was watch as she came at me.

Fortunately, two police officers rushed over just in time.

"Stop!"

One of them grabbed Mrs. Reed's arm and wrestled the rock away from her.

When Mrs. Reed saw the police, it was like a dam broke. She pointed at me, sobbing. "Officers! It was him! He's the one who attacked my daughter! Arrest him! Execute him!"

Mr. Reed's face was dark as he turned to the police. "Officers, this bastard has evidence on his phone. You'll see for yourselves!"

The officer took the phone, examined the cracked screen, and exchanged a glance with his partner.

The crowd fell silent, waiting for the police response.

I lay on the ground, my mind slightly clearer now.

Actually, seeing the police arrive was a relief.

A few minutes later, the tech officer's expression turned extremely grim. He looked up at me, then leaned over and whispered something to his partner.

That officer's face immediately hardened. He pointed at me and barked, "You're coming with us for questioning!"

I gritted my teeth and slowly pushed myself up off the ground.

Every injury screamed in protest. Every step felt like walking on knives.

"Fine. I'll cooperate with your investigation."

But just as I was about to be led away, Lily suddenly burst through the crowd and blocked the officers' path.

She looked at them, tears streaming down her face.

"The evidence is fake!"

"Jason is innocent!"

"If he really did this to me, I would have accepted it willingly!"

"But he's not the one who attacked me! You can't arrest him!"
