Evolution Day: An American Apocalypse Chapter 10
The video ended with a question: "When animals gain human intelligence, will they be content remaining animals?"
Humanity was shocked.
Day 11 of the Cataclysm: Bird flocks suddenly launched suicide attacks on communication towers. Even knowing animals had grown smarter, no one expected this. Caught off guard, they actually succeeded. Humanity lost contact with the outside world.
After thoroughly checking all nearby security, I tiredly headed home.
Cooper and the others followed, carrying their latest catch.
Animals and insects had been approaching human settlements all week. Just this week alone, I'd faced three waves of bird attacks.
...Now it was the fourth.
I looked at the building-sized wild boar before me, covered in steel-needle quills, and thought bitterly:
Just as I prepared to fight or flee, a crimson streak suddenly cut through the sky with a whistling sound, hurtling toward the boar.
The boar's head exploded instantly, blood spraying everywhere.
I had an inkling. Turning, I saw tanks approaching through the fog, those familiar military uniforms on top.
The next moment, the community's broadcast system—installed but never used—crackled to life.
"Crackle... This is the United States Armed Forces, Fourth Radio Station..."
"Crackle... We stand ready to give everything for our country..."
"Crackle... Please don't worry, don't give up. Rescue teams will search every corner of America until we find you."
"Please hold on. Victory is on the horizon."
"America will not abandon a single citizen."
As the broadcast echoed through the community, I watched the rapidly approaching soldiers.
Somehow, my voice became hoarse.
"The military is here. We're saved!"
More survivors emerged from their homes, voices choked with emotion.
"The military is here!"
"We're saved!"
No one wants to live in constant danger. Neither did I.
Day 29 of the Cataclysm: I was finally rescued.
Afterward, while humans hadn't evolved, the U.S. government leveraged military power to establish cooperation with human-friendly evolved creatures, granting citizenship to cooperative beings who contributed to human society.
Other nations followed suit.
Three years post-Cataclysm: Humanity entered a new era.
Human civilization survived.
From then on, humanity had a new frontier.
