Evolution Day: An American Apocalypse Chapter 4

If Cooper were small, this would be adorable.

...Okay, a ten-foot-tall cat is actually still pretty cute.

But looking at the ten-foot Cooper and Duke beneath me, who must be at least thirteen feet tall...

I fell into deep contemplation.

If the first floor weren't tall enough, they wouldn't fit in the house.

As I thought this, my drowsy mind suddenly cleared. I realized what was happening.

I rushed to the window and yanked open the curtains.

Swish—

Instead of blinding sunlight, I saw thick fog obscuring everything, and within my limited visibility, enormous, menacing vegetation.

Fog blanketed everything outside, reducing visibility to a few dozen feet.

Within my line of sight, the ivy that had decorated the villa's exterior now covered the walls and gate densely. The thinnest vines were thumb-thick; the thickest, wrist-thick.

The vines were so dark green they appeared black, unlike normal ivy. They had thorns and grew menacingly, like predators lurking in shadows, ready to pounce.

Beyond them, by the small lake, stood a willow tree over sixty feet tall. Its dense branches whipped through the air like steel cables, creating sharp whistling sounds with each movement.

When a fist-sized ant passed too close, there was a whistling sound, and three or four branches impaled it from different directions.

Some nearby villas were completely engulfed in green, with dark red bloodstains visible on the vines.

People who'd been walking outside last night were now just piles of meat on the pavement.

Through the fog, I could hear terrified screams in the distance.

I covered my mouth, face pale, staring at everything.

It felt completely different from watching parallel worlds through fog in my dreams.

Finally, I thought dazedly:

So this is catastrophe!

This is our world's catastrophe!

I finally knew what disaster we faced.

Not zombies. Not famine. Not floods.

Evolution.

The evolution of every living thing except humans!

Humans emerged on Earth about three million years ago.

Over countless years, humans rose to the top of the food chain.

But what if one day, humans weren't at the top anymore?

Watching everything outside, this thought struck me.

I quickly refocused, pulling out my phone to check the situation.

The signal was still full. I breathed a small sigh of relief.

The internet had exploded.

"Why is there fog everywhere?!"

"Don't go outside! Don't go outside! Don't go outside!"

"Help! My hamster went crazy—it's bigger than a cat with red eyes. When I woke up, it was gnawing my leg. Good thing I woke up early and killed it first."

"My neighbor got eaten by their Venus flytrap like a bug. They're completely digested now."

"Help! I'm on the eighteenth floor running out of food. Someone save me!"

"A cockroach the size of my phone just appeared. Thank God my cat Mittens saved me!"

"I just saw a ten-foot-tall dog eat someone downstairs."
