Princess's Revenge: Slave to the Soulbound King Chapter 15
Adelaide
Consciousness returned to me slowly, like surfacing from deep, warm water. The first sensation was softness—a real bed beneath my body, clean linens against my skin, and the gentle weight of blankets that smelled of lavender and pine. My eyelids felt heavy as I fought to open them, and when I finally managed, I found myself staring at unfamiliar surroundings.
The room was unlike anything I'd seen in Lycandor Keep. Tapestries in rich greens and silvers hung from the walls, depicting scenes of forest life and celestial symbols. Sunlight streamed through tall windows, illuminating bundles of dried herbs hanging from the ceiling beams. The air carried a faint, pleasant fragrance—something between mint and wildflowers.
A soft gasp drew my attention to the side of the bed, where a slender figure knelt with her hands hovering over my body. Emerald light flowed from her fingertips like liquid starlight, and where it touched my skin, I felt a cooling relief that seemed to seep into my very bones. The burning heat that had consumed me in the forest was still there, but muted now, manageable.
The woman looked up as she noticed my stirring, and I found myself gazing into eyes that sparkled like captured starlight. Her face was delicate and kind, framed by honey-colored hair that caught the afternoon light. A gentle smile curved her lips as she met my gaze.
"You're finally awake!" she said, her voice carrying genuine relief. "I was so worried about you." She slowly withdrew her hands, the healing magic fading from her fingertips. "I'm Seraphina, Commander Vespera's sister. He brought you to Fenriswood Bastion and immediately asked me to help you."
I struggled to sit up, my body still weak but no longer wracked with the terrible heat that had overwhelmed me. "Thank you," I managed, my voice hoarse. "If it weren't for your healing, I don't know what would have happened to me."
Seraphina's expression grew more serious as she gently helped me adjust the pillows behind my back. "My healing can only temporarily ease the symptoms of a Moon Bride's awakening. Soon, that burning will return, and it will be even stronger than before," she said softly, her fingers absently smoothing my disheveled hair. "Once a Moon Bride's awakening begins, there's only one way to truly alleviate the pain—union with a werewolf. The awakening won't stop until it's complete."
I absorbed this information with surprising calm. Perhaps it was exhaustion, or perhaps some part of me had already accepted the inevitable. I nodded slowly. "I understand."
Something shifted in my expression, and I looked up at her with determination. "I'd like to thank Commander Vespera personally. He saved my life today."
Seraphina's face brightened with a warm smile. "Of course. Let me get you something clean to wear, and I'll take you to him. He's been waiting for you to wake up."
She moved to a nearby wardrobe and withdrew a simple but well-made dress in pale green fabric. As I changed into it, I found myself grateful for the modest cut and soft material—a sharp contrast to the rough slave garments I'd grown accustomed to.
Seraphina led me through corridors that reflected the same natural aesthetic as her healing chamber. The stone walls were softened by hanging plants and artwork depicting forest scenes. Everything about Fenriswood Bastion spoke of harmony between civilization and nature—so different from the stark militarism of Lycandor Keep.
We entered a spacious reception room where tall windows offered a view of the surrounding forest. A figure stood silhouetted against the light, hands clasped behind his back in a posture of quiet contemplation. At our approach, he turned, and I recognized the gentle yet authoritative features of Commander Vespera.
"Commander Vespera," I said, offering a slight bow that felt natural despite my circumstances. "I wanted to thank you for your intervention today. If you hadn't arrived when you did..."
My voice caught slightly as the memory of those rough hands and leering faces flooded back. I pushed the images away, focusing on the man who had saved me.
Vespera raised a hand, dismissing my gratitude with gracious modesty. "You need not thank me. Those men's actions were a disgrace to werewolf honor." He studied me with eyes that seemed to see far more than I was comfortable revealing. "But I must ask you directly—you are a Moon Bride, aren't you? And the person who has had contact with the Wolf King and received his protection... that was you, not Thalia?"
My heart hammered against my ribs as his perceptive gaze seemed to strip away all my carefully maintained deceptions. In this moment, faced with such direct questioning from someone who had shown me kindness, lies felt futile and dishonoring.
Slowly, I nodded.
Vespera's expression didn't change, but something like hope flickered in his eyes. "I have a request to make of you," he said, stepping closer. "Continue to serve the Wolf King. I believe you have the power to help him recover his sanity."
He paused, letting the weight of his words settle before continuing. "For three hundred years, he has been trapped in that bestial state, and you are the first person who has managed to connect with him. Commander Garrick is planning to kill the Wolf King and claim the throne for himself. If he succeeds, our people will follow him down an even darker path."
The revelation hit me like a physical blow. My mind raced through the implications—not just for the werewolf clans, but for my own kingdom. The part of me that was Princess Adelaide of Eldoria whispered urgent warnings: *If the Wolf King recovers his sanity, won't that make him an even greater threat to humanity? Wouldn't it be better for my people if he remained a mindless beast?*
But then I thought of Lycanthar's eyes in those brief moments of connection, the pain and intelligence I'd glimpsed beneath the rage. And I thought of Garrick's cruelty, his obvious lust for power and violence.
The moral complexity of my situation felt overwhelming. Every choice seemed to betray someone—my kingdom, my people, or the broken king who had somehow claimed a piece of my soul.
In this moment of impossible decision, I realized I had no real choice at all. I needed time—time to understand what was happening to me, time to find a way to protect Eldoria, time to navigate the treacherous waters I found myself in.
"I'll do what I can," I said finally, the words feeling both like a promise and a compromise with my own conscience.
Relief visibly washed over Vespera's features. "Thank you. I'll arrange for your escort back to the royal court, and I'll increase the guards around you. Garrick's men won't have another opportunity to harm you."
He moved toward the door, then paused. "Remember, in this struggle for power, you're not alone."
Whatever lay ahead, I knew there would be no easy answers, no choices that didn't carry the weight of betrayal or sacrifice. All I could do was hold fast to my conviction that somewhere in this maze of conflicting loyalties, there had to be a path that led to something better than endless war and hatred.
