Princess's Revenge: Slave to the Soulbound King Chapter 159
Adelaide
A chill ran down my spine as Lycanthar and I exchanged a worried glance. The guard's words brought back memories I'd tried to bury. Four years ago, in this very keep, werewolf lords had surrounded me, demanding my execution as a "human royal spy."
Lycanthar's fingers intertwined with mine in a gesture both protective and reassuring. "This time is different," he said quietly, his golden eyes meeting mine with unwavering determination. "I will not allow anyone to take you from my side ever again."
The conviction in his voice sent warmth through my chest, steadying my racing pulse. We had faced vampires and ancient evils, survived betrayals and separations. Whatever awaited us in that courtyard, we would face it together.
"Then let us not keep them waiting," I took a deep breath, rising from my chair with more confidence than I felt.
Lycanthar stood beside me, his hand never leaving mine. We shared a brief smile and walked toward the door together, our footsteps echoing in the stone corridors as we made our way to whatever fate awaited us.
The main courtyard was packed with werewolves—not just the tribal chiefs I’d expected, but also elders and common folk. Their faces turned toward us as we emerged, and what I saw there took my breath away.
Gone was the hostility I remembered, the sneers and murderous glares. Instead, I was met with expressions of respect, gratitude, and something that looked remarkably like hope. Many bowed their heads as we passed, a gesture of acknowledgment I had never dreamed I would receive from werewolf society.
To my surprise, Ulrich of the North Wind stepped forward from the crowd. This was the same tribal leader who had vehemently opposed me four years ago, who had called for my immediate execution. Now, his weathered face bore no trace of that old animosity.
"Princess Adelaide," he said, his voice carrying clearly across the courtyard. "On behalf of the assembled clans and packs of Silverhowl, I wish to express our deepest gratitude."
I blinked in astonishment, hardly believing what I was hearing.
"You came to our aid in our darkest hour," Ulrich continued, "setting aside past grievances when our very survival was at stake. You risked your life to purify our king's corruption, and your human armies fought alongside us against the vampire threat. The courage you showed, the sacrifices your people made—these will not be forgotten."
Murmurs of agreement rippled through the crowd. I saw faces I recognized from the recent battle, werewolves who had fought beside my brother's soldiers, who had witnessed the alliance between our peoples firsthand.
My throat tightened with emotion. These were words I had hoped to hear but never truly believed would come to pass.
"The time for ancient grudges has passed," I said, my voice growing stronger. "Both our races have suffered enough. We have seen what we can accomplish when we work together—vampires defeated, lives saved, hope restored. Perhaps it is time for humans and werewolves to write a new chapter in our shared history, one built on understanding rather than fear."
The crowd stirred with approval, and I felt a surge of hope that peace between our peoples might truly be possible.
Then Elder Rothesgard, one of the most respected voices in werewolf society, stepped forward from the group of tribal leaders. His ancient eyes, which had seen centuries of conflict and change, fixed on me with startling intensity.
"Which brings us to why we have truly gathered today," he announced, his voice resonating across the courtyard. "The assembled clans and packs of Silverhowl have reached a unanimous decision. We formally request that Princess Adelaide Valendria accept the title and responsibilities of Wolf Queen."
The words hit me like a physical blow. I stared at the elder in shock, then looked around at the faces surrounding us. Every werewolf present was watching me with expectation, many nodding their agreement with the elder's declaration.
"I..." I turned to Lycanthar, seeking guidance, unsure how to respond to such an unprecedented honor.
His eyes were warm with pride and something deeper. "This was always meant to be," he said softly, his voice carrying a note of reverence. "The moon goddess's will has been clear from the beginning. You belong here, beside me, as queen of our people."
The crowd erupted in cheers, voices raised in unison: "Long live the Wolf King and Queen! Long live Lycanthar and Adelaide!"
As the cheers continued to echo off the ancient stones of Lycandor Keep, I felt tears prick my eyes as the magnitude of the moment settled over me. Sometimes the greatest transformations came not through force or conquest, but through understanding, sacrifice, and the courage to see beyond old wounds.
---
Time had flown by swiftly. Over the past month, Lycandor Keep had undergone a remarkable transformation. The scars of battle had been healed, damaged walls rebuilt, and the entire fortress was now celebrating this long-awaited moment of peace and unity.
I stood alone in my chambers, carefully examining the ancient ceremonial robes laid out before me. Tomorrow would mark my formal coronation as Wolf Queen, and despite the honor, I felt a familiar flutter of nerves in my stomach.
My brooding was interrupted by excited voices in the hallway, followed by a gentle knock on my door.
"Come in," I called, turning from the ceremonial robes.
The door burst open, and Nova bounded into the room like a ray of sunshine. Behind her, Pax followed at a more measured pace, though his eyes sparkled with the same excitement. Thalia appeared in the doorway, looking radiant in a way that still took my breath away.
"Aunt Adelaide!" Nova exclaimed, throwing her small arms around my legs. "Look what I made for you!"
She held up a carefully woven crown of wildflowers and silver ribbon, the blooms still fresh with morning dew. "It's for your big day! Mama helped me pick the flowers that mean good luck and happiness."
"It's beautiful, sweetheart," I said, kneeling down to accept the crown. "Thank you so much."
Nova placed the flower crown on my head with careful reverence. "There! Now you look like a real Wolf Queen already!"
Thalia laughed, the sound like silver bells, and I was struck again by how transformed she seemed. The constant pallor and fatigue that had marked her for years were gone, replaced by an otherworldly vitality that made her seem to glow from within.
"How are you feeling?" I asked her, studying her face with concern. "Really feeling, I mean."
"Better than I have in... well, perhaps better than I ever have," she replied, settling gracefully into one of the chairs by the window. "Being fully awakened as a Moon Bride has changed everything. Draven and I have formed the soul bond—we share life force now. I can feel his strength, his emotions, even some of his thoughts. It's... indescribable."
The wonder in her voice made me smile despite my own uncertainties. "I'm so happy for you. You deserve this joy after everything you've endured."
But Thalia, always perceptive, caught the shadow that crossed my expression. "What troubles you, Adelaide? You should be celebrating."
I sank into the chair across from her. "I can't shake the feeling that something will go wrong. Last time things seemed to be going well between Lycanthar and me, everything fell apart. Lazarus is still out there somewhere, and I keep thinking..."
"That history will repeat itself?" Thalia finished gently.
I nodded, not trusting my voice.
"Oh, my dear friend," Thalia reached across to squeeze my hand. "I understand that fear, but this time is different. Lycanthar has learned from past mistakes. He's personally overseeing every aspect of security for the coronation. Every guest has been vetted, every entrance monitored. He won't let anything threaten you again."
"And what about Lazarus?" I asked. "He could be anywhere, planning anything."
"Seraphina examined you thoroughly after the battle," Thalia reminded me. "The black magic that struck you left no lasting traces. As for Lazarus, he's isolated now, cut off from his power network. He's dangerous, yes, but he's also alone."
Her reassurance helped ease some of the tension in my chest, but I couldn't entirely shake my unease.
Night had fallen. Thalia gathered the sleepy children and led them back to their rooms. After they left, I stood by the window, gazing out at the star-strewn sky above Silverhowl, my thoughts drifting to the ceremony awaiting us.
I heard familiar footsteps in the corridor; moments later, Lycansa entered our room. He carried with him the scent of the forest and the cool night air—he had finished his final patrol and now stood quietly behind me.
