Old Mrs. Montgomery wasn't satisfied with that. She gave Lucas, just returned from the club, a thorough scolding:

Seth looked at me with fervent eyes:

"Natalie, I won't make empty promises. Life is long, and I'll prove it to you through my actions."

Lucas wanted to say more, but Dad's cold snort interrupted him.

"If you're here to bless Natalie, stay and have a drink. If you're here to cause trouble, don't blame us for calling the police despite our families' years of friendship!"

Lucas left dejectedly, but said unwillingly before leaving:
