The Emergency Room Secret Chapter 10

Winter passed, spring came, and cherry blossoms filled the hospital pathways. I'd just finished surgery and was walking out of the OR when I saw Ryan Chen leaning against the corridor window, waiting for me.

"Old friend," he smiled and handed me a coffee. "Today's the day of Nathan and Mark's final sentencing."

I took the coffee, feeling its warmth spread from my fingertips. "How long did they get?"

"Nathan got twenty years, his buddy eighteen. Given the numerous victims and the egregious nature of the crimes, the court imposed severe sentences."

I nodded. This outcome was expected. Over these months, more victims had come forward to testify. The Virtue Education case had caused a nationwide sensation and pushed forward improvements in related laws.

"Let's go," Ryan checked his watch. "Lily and Jake said they wanted to treat us to dinner."

At the restaurant, Lily Martinez and Jake were already waiting. The girl looked much better than before, her gaze no longer evasive. She wore a light blue dress, her hair in a simple ponytail, radiating youthful vitality.

"Dr. Foster! Detective Chen!" She waved at us. "Over here!"

Jake stood too. He'd gotten a clean haircut and no longer looked like a street punk. I'd heard he'd gone to vocational school to study computer science and found a good job.

"We invited you to dinner today to share good news." Lily smiled, her eyes bright. "Jake and I..."

"We're getting married." Jake continued, scratching his head somewhat embarrassedly. "We're still young, but we want to build a good life together."

"Congratulations!" I said sincerely. "You're the ones who know best how to cherish each other."

"And..." Lily pulled a letter from her bag. "I got into a psychology program. I want to help girls with similar experiences, let them know there's hope after the pain."

Ryan raised his glass. "To new beginnings."

"To new beginnings!" We clinked glasses, the sound crisp and clear.

After a few rounds of drinks, Ryan suddenly turned serious. "Claire, there's something I've been meaning to tell you."

"What is it?"

"Our department is establishing a unit specifically for campus crimes. We need experienced psychological counselors. You performed excellently in this case—I was wondering if you'd be interested..."

I paused. "You mean part-time police psychological consulting?"

"Yes," he said earnestly. "You have medical expertise and you've been through all this. You understand best how to help victims. Of course, it would just be part-time and wouldn't interfere with your hospital work."

I looked at the cherry blossoms outside the window, thinking about these past months. Perhaps this was fate's arrangement.

"I'm willing." I said.

Lily suddenly hugged me. "Dr. Foster, thank you. Without you, we might never have escaped that nightmare."

"Silly girl," I gently patted her back.

Night fell as we walked side by side down the cherry blossom-lined street. This year, we'd all been through so much, but we'd all become stronger. Life was like these cherry blossoms—seemingly fragile, yet able to bloom again after winter's end.

"By the way," Ryan suddenly said, "there's a symposium next week about campus safety. Would you like to come?"

I looked at his awkward expression and couldn't help but smile. "Sure. I'd like to learn more about this work anyway."

Lily and Jake exchanged knowing glances and quietly fell a few steps behind. The spring breeze blew past, cherry blossom petals dancing around us, as if celebrating this new beginning.
