The Emergency Room Secret Chapter 9
I stood on the courthouse steps, looking at the divorce decree in my hands. Five years of marriage had come to this end. The judge, considering Nathan's criminal acts, awarded me most of the marital assets in addition to necessary compensation.
I removed the ring from my finger and tossed it into the trash. This ring had once symbolized love but was now evidence of deception—just like the "limited edition" gifts Nathan had given those girls, all part of his carefully designed trap.
"Dr. Foster!" A familiar voice interrupted my thoughts. Lily Martinez and Jake ran toward me, the girl's face finally showing a healthy flush.
"How did you know to come?"
"Detective Chen told us about today's hearing." Lily grasped my hand, tears shining in her eyes. "These past three months, thanks to you..."
Jake stood beside her, his eyes reddening. "If you hadn't stood up for us, those crimes might never have been exposed."
I shook my head. "Don't say that. It was your courage that brought justice. Daring to come forward and testify, facing those painful memories—that courage is what was truly difficult."
"By the way," Lily carefully took an envelope from her bag, "my transfer application was approved. Jake says..." She glanced at Jake beside her, blushing slightly. "He says he'll go back to our hometown with me. Start over."
I looked at this young couple before me. Once, one had been hurt, the other helpless. Now they could finally support each other and move forward together. Perhaps this was fate's best arrangement.
"Take care of each other." I said softly. "Your new life is just beginning."
"Dr. Foster," Jake said earnestly, "you take care too. This isn't an ending—it's a new beginning."
