The Entomologist's Perfect Crime Chapter 3
I thought my wife might have gone to the orphanage to see the children, so I went there.
But she hadn't come.
The director asked me:
"Did you argue with Lily? Did you do something to upset her?"
My face contorted in pain: "No."
The director speculated:
"Then maybe something came up, she went back to Riverdale, or Lily had a sudden business trip."
We also owned property in Riverdale. Thinking of this possibility, I felt less anxious.
My wife had left home without a word. As her husband, I kept calling.
But she was too angry and wouldn't answer my calls.
From the initial panic when I discovered my wife was missing, I eventually felt somewhat wronged.
I considered myself a qualified husband, and we'd never fought since we got married.
She just left suddenly like this, wouldn't answer calls, and I didn't even have anyone to confront.
The director thought for a moment:
"Ray, is it possible she went to a friend's place?"
Could my wife have gone to a friend's house?
But my intuition told me.
No.
I returned home dejected.
I took out my phone to report to the police when my son seemed to wake up from the noise.
A few days ago, my son had accidentally been stung by a bee, and his face was swollen.
"Not sleeping in the middle of the night, what are you doing?"
I was instantly furious, raising my hand and slapping my son's face. His already swollen face became even more swollen.
"Ryan, do you have no conscience! Your mother is missing, and you can still sleep!"
My son pushed me, and the nearly ten-year-old boy had considerable strength.
He pushed me down onto the sofa.
"Mom texted me. She's staying at a friend's house tonight and won't be back."
He showed me his phone.
Sure enough, there was a message from my wife to our son.
"Good boy, Mommy is visiting friends today and won't be home tonight. Remember to tell Daddy."
I asked: "Why didn't you tell me?"
My son's eyes flickered, and he pursed his lips:
"I forgot."
I felt something was odd, but could only accept this explanation.
I didn't understand why my wife only texted our son and not me.
Or even answer my calls.
