The Princess's Revenge Chapter 95

Logan’s POV

A roar that shook the ground beneath my paws. Like thunder, but alive. Every wolf on the battlefield froze.

I had no time to consider this sudden roar. My survival instinct made me feel the gray wolf's teeth loosen. Just for a second. But that second was all I needed.

My claws tore through flesh, finding his heart. Hot blood sprayed across my face as I ripped it out. The gray wolf's eyes went wide with shock before his body went limp.

"Move!" Knox roared in my head.

I threw the dead wolf off and scrambled backward. Three more wolves lunged at me. I slashed at them, forcing them back. My legs shook. Blood still poured from my neck, but I could breathe again.

The other wolves circled me, but something was wrong. They weren't attacking. Their eyes weren't on me anymore. They were looking up, ears flat against their heads.

"What the hell?" I growled.

The moonlight started to dim. A shadow passed over us, growing larger by the second.

"Logan," Knox's voice was barely a whisper. "Look up."

I raised my head. My heart stopped.

A DRAGON.

A massive red dragon circled above us.

The creature was enormous, easily the length of three houses. Its scales gleamed like fresh blood in the moonlight, each one the size of a shield. The wings stretched out impossibly wide, creating gusts of wind with every beat.

Its head was angular, with two curved horns sweeping back from its skull. The eyes glowed golden, bright as molten metal. Steam rose from its nostrils with each breath. The tail whipped through the air behind it, tipped with spikes. Every movement was controlled. This wasn't just a beast. This was death incarnate.

The dragon's presence pressed down on everyone. Wolves on both sides cowered, some shifting back to human form in their terror. Even from this distance, I could feel the heat radiating from its body.

"That's..." Knox's voice shook. "Logan, that's not possible."

"What’s going on? Do you feel anything?" I growled.

"That's Valencia. I can sense her."

"WHAT?!"

"It's her. I know it's her. Our mate is up there."

Hope flickered in my chest, but fear crushed it immediately. I stared at those golden eyes as the dragon descended slowly. There was nothing familiar in them. No recognition. No warmth. Just cold, predatory focus.

"Valencia?" I called through the mind link.

Nothing.

"Valencia, it's me. It's Logan."

Silence.

"She's not responding," I told Knox.

"It is her. I can feel it. " Knox insisted.

"Why isn't she answering? Why can't I feel her through our bond?"

The dragon was lower now, maybe fifty feet above us. Its shadow covered half the battlefield. Wolves scattered in every direction, running for their lives.

But I couldn't move. I stood there, blood dripping from my wounds, staring up at the creature that Knox insisted was my mate.

"Valencia," I tried again through the mind link. "Please. If you can hear me, give me a sign. Anything."

The dragon's head turned toward me. Those golden eyes locked onto mine. With a lofty, condescending gaze looking down at the ants below, and what seemed like a hint of displeasure flickering across those eyes.

Fear crawled up my spine. Real, primal fear. The kind that told every instinct in my body to run. It confirmed my thoughts.

"This isn't right," I said. "That's not Valencia in control."

The dragon's mouth opened slightly, revealing those terrible teeth. A low rumble came from its throat. The wind from her wings knocked me backward.

"Holy shit," Knox breathed in my mind.

I caught a glimpse of her eyes as she passed. They were full of contempt and rage. Each beat of those massive wings created gusts that made the dead wolves' bodies roll across the ground.

She flew straight toward Elton's army. From where I lay, I could see Elton's face change. The mocking smile was gone. Pure terror replaced it.

"Retreat!" Elton screamed. "Everyone retreat! Now!"

He yanked his horse around and kicked it hard. His warriors were already scattering. Some threw down their weapons and ran. Others stood frozen, staring up at the dragon in horror.

"Where's Dorian?" I muttered, scanning the chaos.

"Gone," Knox said. "The coward disappeared the moment she transformed."

"This fucking coward." I cursed.

The dragon opened her jaws. I saw the glow building in her throat.

"Get down!" someone screamed from Elton's ranks.

Fire erupted from her mouth. A massive stream of flames that lit up the entire battlefield. The heat hit me even from here, making my skin tighten.

The screams started immediately. Warriors caught in the flames didn't even have time to run. They just... burned. The lucky ones died instantly. Others rolled on the ground, their clothes and fur ablaze. The smell of burning flesh filled the air. Some tried to help their burning comrades, only to catch fire themselves.

One wolf tried to escape, his back legs already on fire. He made it three steps before collapsing. Another warrior threw himself into a muddy ditch, but the flames followed, turning the water to steam.

Bodies writhed and twisted in the inferno. The siege weapons they'd brought caught fire too. The wooden battering ram became a massive torch. The siege tower collapsed in a shower of sparks and screaming men who'd been climbing it.

"This is..." Knox couldn't finish.

"I know," I said quietly.

I felt afraid. The dragon's power was beyond anything I'd imagined. One breath had destroyed what would have taken our entire pack hours to fight. Bodies were scattered everywhere, some still moving weakly, others completely still.

"At least she's on our side," I whispered to myself.

Through the wall of flames, I could see movement at the back of Elton's army. The ones who hadn't been caught in the fire were running. Really running. Abandoning weapons, wounded comrades, everything. Just trying to get as far away as possible.

The dragon wasn't pursuing them. She turned in the air, those massive wings catching the light from the fires below. She was heading back toward the castle.

"Knox," I said nervously. "What if she—"

"She's not going to destroy the castle, I can feel it. Her power is fading. She's probably going somewhere to shift back."

I let out a breath I didn't know I was holding. "Yeah. You're right. I'm just... too tense."

"Your mate just turned into a dragon."

Hoofbeats behind me. "Alpha!" Elias's voice, desperate and relieved. "Alpha, are you alright?"

I shifted back to human form. The effort left me exhausted. I lay on the blood-soaked ground, staring up at the sky that was starting to turn pale with dawn.

I took a deep breath. We'd survived. I hadn't died. The pack was safe. The relief was overwhelming.

"Alpha?" Elias's voice seemed to come from very far away.

"I'm..." I started to say.

The edges of my vision went dark. The exhaustion and ache hit at once.

"Alpha!"

Everything went black.
