Alpha's STOLEN Mate Chapter 149

Elowen

I stepped into the Lunar Sanctuary, and the sight stole my breath.

The space was impossibly grand—carved into a natural amphitheater with a massive pool at its center. Rising from the water stood an enormous statue of the Moon Goddess herself, easily thirty feet tall, rendered in pale stone that seemed to glow from within. Behind her, the full moon hung in the sky, its light almost entirely blocked by the statue's broad back, casting the Goddess's face and front in deep shadow.

Before the statue, elevated on a stone platform, sat two thrones. Two magnificent seats of power.

Kaius occupied one of them, waiting. Even from this distance, I could see his silhouette—regal, commanding, perfectly still.

The thrones were positioned at the top of a grand staircase, elevated above an expansive audience area. A path embedded with precious stones—sapphires, moonstones, diamonds—created a glittering walkway from the entrance straight to the thrones. The audience areas were darker, lit by torches that created dancing shadows and pools of warm light where hundreds of supernatural dignitaries sat in carefully arranged order of importance.

I took it all in—the scale, the drama, the sheer theatrical magnificence—and felt my nervousness transform into something else entirely.

*God.* A smile spread across my face. *This is it. This is where I belong.*

How could anything less than this—this spectacular, awe-inspiring display—be worthy of my coronation as Queen?

I straightened my spine, lifted my chin, and began to walk.

Each step sent light cascading across my dress—the torchlight caught in the crystals embedded in the pathway, reflecting upward, making my white gown shimmer and glow as if I were walking through starlight itself.

The audience reacted immediately.

"My God," someone breathed, the words carrying in the sudden hush. "She looks like the Moon Goddess incarnate!"

"I had doubts about her choice of dress," another voice admitted. "All that talk about wearing a human wedding gown instead of traditional robes—I thought it was disrespectful. But now... I take it all back. She's absolutely radiant!"

"We are blessed," an elderly voice proclaimed. "To witness such a Queen in our lifetime—what an honor!"

The praise washed over me like warm honey. I let it fuel my steps, my confidence building with each word of admiration.

Frost guided me up the stairs with perfect ceremony, his movements precise and elegant. When we reached the top, I finally got a clear view of the two thrones.

They were completely different from each other.

Kaius's throne was carved from black obsidian—dark, imposing, all sharp angles and commanding presence. A king's seat, unmistakably.

The throne beside it—my throne—was crafted entirely from moonstone. Silver-white and luminous even in the dim light, with curves and flowing lines that suggested both grace and strength. A Queen's seat.

They were perfect. Complementary opposites. Equal in grandeur but distinctly their own.

Kaius stood as I approached, offering me a small nod and an encouraging smile. His eyes held pride, affection, and something that looked like relief.

I smiled back, grateful. *I misjudged you,* I thought. *This whole production—it really is made for me.*

Frost descended back to the audience, leaving me standing beside Kaius in front of the Chief Elder Faelan, who had taken position at the center of the platform.

Faelan cleared his throat, his voice projecting with surprising strength across the sanctuary.

"The Queen and King stand before the sacred thrones—symbols of our kingdom's eternal legacy! They will ascend these seats together and receive your blessings!"

Applause erupted—genuine, thunderous approval from hundreds of voices.

I felt myself relaxing. The ceremony, the grandeur, the obvious reverence—it was all coming together perfectly.

Faelan raised his hands for silence. "But before that sacred moment, we must complete the Queen's coronation trial!"

My stomach dropped slightly.

"King Kaius—please step aside. This stage belongs to Queen Elowen alone."

Kaius gave me a quick thumbs-up gesture, mouthed "you've got this," and descended the stairs, disappearing into the audience.

Suddenly, I felt very exposed.

Faelan turned to me, his expression kind but formal. "Queen Elowen, please proceed to the center of the pool and receive the Moon Goddess's blessing."

He pointed toward a spot in the middle of the water—directly in front of the statue, in the deepest shadow.

I stared at him. "I'm sorry, did you just ask me to walk into the water? In this dress?"

"There's a platform, my Queen," Faelan assured me quietly. "A lotus pedestal just beneath the surface. You won't be submerged."

I looked at where he was pointing. Sure enough, I could just make out a raised platform shaped like lotus petals positioned in the water's center.

But it was in complete darkness. The statue's massive form blocked all moonlight from reaching that spot—it was like standing in a cave.

"Why there?" I couldn't help asking. "The moon can't reach that location. How am I supposed to receive moonlight when the statue is blocking everything?"

Faelan's smile was gentle, almost apologetic. "Have faith, my Queen. Sincerity of heart is what matters. If your intentions are pure, the Moon Goddess will answer."

I hesitated, uncertainty crawling up my spine.

That's when I heard the whispers from the audience.

"Is she... scared?" Someone snickered softly.

"Oh dear, having second thoughts now? Bit late for that!"

"Maybe she's not as confident as she pretends to be."

The mockery lit a fire in my chest.

*Fuck this.*

I bent down, slipped off my heels and stockings, and grabbed my skirt. If they wanted to watch me wade into a pool in a thousand-dollar dress, fine. I'd give them a show.

The water was shockingly cold as I stepped in—my breath caught for a moment before I forced myself forward. Each step brought me deeper, the hem of my dress darkening as it absorbed water despite my best efforts to hold it up.

Finally, I reached the lotus platform and stepped onto it. The surface was stable but small, forcing me to stand perfectly still.

The statue loomed above me—oppressive, blocking out the sky like some vast shadow creature. Not a single ray of moonlight penetrated this space. It was completely, utterly dark.

The audience fell silent. Waiting.

I waited too.

Seconds stretched into minutes. I stood there, arms slightly raised, trying to feel... something. Anything. Some connection to the Moon Goddess, some sign that I was worthy.

Nothing.

Just cold water lapping at my calves and shadow pressing down from above.

A horrible, familiar feeling crept over me. Four years ago, I'd stood in a different place, waiting for the Moon Goddess to acknowledge me. To give me my wolf. And she'd ignored me. Rejected me. Left me empty and humiliated in front of everyone.

Was this happening again?

*No. No, no, no—*

The water seemed to grow colder. A breeze picked up, making me shiver.

*Fuck. Am I really about to be humiliated a second time?*

Then I remembered Faelan's words: *Sincerity of heart.*

I closed my eyes, took a deep breath, and did something I'd never done before—I prayed. Not with the formal words of ritual, but with raw honesty.

"Moon Goddess," I whispered into the darkness. "I won't blame you for whatever fate you've given me—the good or the bad. I've accepted it all. But right now, I need guidance."

My voice grew stronger. "If I'm worthy of being Queen—if this is truly my path—then let your light touch me. Let your blessing fall upon me so everyone can see."

I paused. Started to say the expected words: *And if I'm not worthy, cast me back into darkness—*

But the words stuck in my throat.

*No.*

"Fuck that," I said aloud, my eyes snapping open. "Whether I'm worthy or not—that's not for anyone else to decide. Not even you."

My voice rang out clear and defiant across the silent sanctuary. "I don't need your approval to know what I am. I don't need your light to validate my strength." I lifted my chin, staring up at the shadow-shrouded face of the Goddess. "So here's what I'll say instead: if I'm not worthy of your blessing, then your blessing isn't worth having. Your light—the light everyone worships and reveres—means nothing if it doesn't shine on those who've earned it through their own power."
