Leah remained standing, her back to the room, gazing out at the cityscape. The adrenaline that had carried her through the confrontation was ebbing, leaving a hollow, bone-deep exhaustion in its wake. She could feel the weight of the board's collective gaze on her back—a mixture of shock, pity, and a newfound, cautious respect.

The chairman cleared his throat, the sound unnaturally loud. "Leah... I think I speak for everyone when I say we are... appalled. And deeply sorry for what you've endured."

She turned slowly to face them. The mask of the unflappable CFO was back, but it felt thinner now, more fragile. "Thank you, Charles. "The immediate threat has been neutralized. But the work to ensure this deal proceeds smoothly is more critical than ever."

Sarah Jenkins nodded, her expression grimly satisfied. "The due diligence teams cannot get a whiff of this. We'll need a unified story. A family emergency requiring Marcus's immediate and indefinite leave of absence. It's vague enough, and it maintains the necessary confidentiality."

There was a murmur of agreement around the table. The gears of corporate survival were already turning, smoothing over the cracks, prioritizing the institution over the individuals shattered within it. Leah was part of that machine now, both its victim and its instrument.

For the next hour, they worked. Lawyers were summoned via secure conference call. A press statement was drafted, stripped of all emotion, a masterclass in obfuscation. Leah answered questions with a clinical detachment, outlining the steps she had already taken to secure the data, to reassure the Nexus team. She was the model of professionalism, a fortress amidst the chaos.

But when the meeting finally adjourned and the board members filed out, offering her somber nods and murmured words of support, the fortress began to crumble. She was left alone in the vast room with Sarah.

Sarah closed the door, granting them a moment of privacy. She didn't offer empty comfort. Instead, she said, "You handled that with remarkable strength. But the hard part isn't over. It's just beginning." She picked up her briefcase. "Go home, Leah. Not to an empty apartment. Go to a hotel. Get some sleep. The lawyers and PR team can handle the rest of today."

Leah just nodded, unable to form words. The weight of it all was pressing down on her.

She followed Sarah's advice. She didn't go back to the apartment that held the ghost of her marriage. She booked a room at a discreet hotel a few blocks away. The anonymity of the beige room was a relief.

Sitting on the edge of the impersonal bed, she scrolled through the news on her phone. The story was already out: "Aetherium CFO Thorne Takes Sudden Leave Amid Merger Finalization." The comments sections were already swirling with speculation, but the official line was holding.

She had done it. She had saved the company. She had exposed the traitor. She was a hero.

So why did she feel so utterly, completely broken?
