The sterile, filtered air of the office building was a shock to Leah’s system after the emotional turmoil of her apartment. Walking through the gleaming lobby, she felt like an imposter. Every familiar face, every cheerful “Good morning, Leah!” felt like an accusation. Did they know? Could they see the fissures running through her perfect life?

She maintained the mask, offering tight smiles and curt nods, her briefcase containing the nuclear secret feeling heavier than lead. Her first stop wasn’t her corner office. It was the office of Sarah Jenkins.

Sarah’s domain was a testament to her decades of experience—elegant but comfortable, with framed degrees on the wall and a bowl of expensive candies on her desk. The older woman looked up from her computer, her sharp eyes taking in Leah’s appearance in one swift, assessing glance.

“Leah. I heard you were magnificent yesterday,” Sarah said, gesturing for her to sit. “Handled the press like a pro. You must be exhausted.”

“It was a long day,” Leah replied, her voice carefully neutral. She sank into the plush chair, the exhaustion she’d been holding back threatening to overwhelm her. She needed to be careful. Sarah was an ally, but she was, first and foremost, a protector of the company.

“Is everything alright?” Sarah asked, her tone shifting from congratulatory to concerned. “You look… pale.”

This was the moment. A calculated risk. Leah couldn’t reveal her hand, but she needed to lay the groundwork. She needed an ally.

She leaned forward, lowering her voice slightly. “Sarah… does anything ever feel… too perfect to be true?”

“In my experience,” Sarah said slowly, selecting a candy and unwrapping it with deliberate slowness, “perfection is usually a performance. The question is, who is it for?” She popped the candy into her mouth. “And what is the cost of maintaining the facade?”

The words hit Leah with the force of a physical blow. It was as if Sarah had looked directly into her soul. It wasn’t confirmation, but it was an opening. A shared understanding of the shadows that lurked behind corporate success.

“Sometimes the cost feels… very high,” Leah managed to say, her throat tight.

Sarah’s gaze softened infinitesimally. “It often is, for the people who actually do the work. While others…” She let the sentence hang, a wealth of implication in those two words. While others reap the rewards.She leaned forward, her voice dropping to a near whisper. “Leah, this is a critical time for the company. And for you. The mouse was approaching the cheese.

Leah’s blood ran cold, but she kept her expression placid. She stood up abruptly. “Thank you, Sarah. I appreciate the advice. I should… I have a mountain of due diligence requests to get through.”

Sarah nodded, her keen eyes missing nothing. “Of course. My door is always open, Leah. Remember that.”

Leah left the office, her heart hammering against her ribs. The conversation with Sarah had been a lifeline, a hint of support in the treacherous waters.
