Chapter 4: The Mask

The bright, sterile light of the backstage restroom was a brutal contrast to the warm opulence of the lobby. Leah locked the door behind her, the click echoing in the tiled silence. For a moment, she leaned against the cool wood, her entire body trembling with the aftershock. The damning words from the tablet swirled behind her eyes: her downfall… your stepping stone.

A sob threatened to claw its way up her throat. She clamped a hand over her mouth, stifling it. No. Not here. Not now.She could fall apart later, in the privacy of whatever was left of her life. But not here, not under the glare of the lights he had chosen for her destruction.

She pushed herself away from the door and strode to the sink, gripping the porcelain basin until her knuckles turned white. The woman in the mirror was a ghost—pale, wide-eyed, a stark reflection of the confident CFO who had entered the hotel an hour ago. That woman is gone, she thought, the realization a fresh wave of pain. She was built on a lie.

But another woman was emerging from the wreckage. One who had nothing left to lose.

She turned on the cold tap, cupping her hands under the icy stream. She splashed the water on her face, again and again, the shock of the cold a welcome anchor to the present. Droplets clung to her lashes like false tears. She patted her face dry with a rough paper towel, the friction bringing a faint, stinging color back to her cheeks.

Then, she opened her clutch. With hands that were now unnervingly steady, she went to work. Concealer erased the shadows under her eyes. A dusting of powder muted the pallor of her skin. A swift, precise stroke of red lipstick—his favorite shade, the irony a bitter pill—became an act of defiance. She was painting on a mask, layer by layer. The mask of Leah Covington, unflappable CFO.

She met her own gaze in the mirror. The eyes staring back were still haunted, but beneath the horror, a new emotion flickered: a cold, focused fury. He had underestimated her. He thought he was breaking a dependent wife. He was about to meet the woman who had fought her way out of nothing to the top of a male-dominated field. He had awakened the fighter, not the victim.

A sharp rap on the door made her jump. “Leah? They’re introducing you. It’s time.” Marcus’s voice, smooth as silk, laced with a feigned concern that now made her skin crawl.

Time. The word hung in the air. Time to step onto his stage. Time to play her part in his little drama.

She took one last, deep breath, holding it until her lungs burned, then exhaled slowly, releasing the last vestiges of the shattered woman. She squared her shoulders, the expensive wool of her blazer pulling taut. The mask was complete.

She unlocked the door. Marcus stood there, his smile perfectly calibrated—proud husband, supportive partner. His eyes scanned her face, and for a fraction of a second, she saw a flicker of surprise. Was he expecting a weeping mess?

“You okay? You look… intense,” he said, reaching out to touch her arm.

She sidestepped the gesture smoothly, picking up her briefcase. “Just focused,” she said, her voice a cool, professional monotone that betrayed nothing. “Let’s go. The world is waiting.”

She walked past him, not waiting to see his reaction. The hallway to the stage seemed to stretch for miles. With every step, the mask fused more firmly to her skin. The pain was locked away in a vault deep inside. All that remained was the ice-cold certainty of what she had to do.

She could hear the muffled voice of the moderator from beyond the heavy curtains. “…the driving force behind this historic deal, please welcome Chief Financial Officer, Leah Covington!”

Leah paused at the edge of the curtain, a performer waiting for her cue. She closed her eyes for one final second. This is no longer about saving the deal, she thought. This is about declaring war.

She pushed through the curtains, a brilliant, practiced smile gracing her newly painted lips, and stepped into the blinding light.
