Mated To My Mate's Worst Enemy Chapter 43
ARIA
"Aria," she breathed. "You look—you look like exactly what this pack needs."
"Is everything ready?" I asked, surprised by how steady my voice sounded.
"Almost. The ceremonial clearing is prepared, the guests are assembled, the guards are in position. Ivory finished the security arrangements an hour ago and is currently doing final preparations with Kael." Nina's expression was carefully neutral when she mentioned Ivory, but I caught the flicker of something—concern, maybe, or warning. "He's still in human form. Stable. Ready."
"And Damon?"
"No sign of him yet. But we're prepared if he shows up. Extra patrols on all borders, guards stationed throughout the ceremony site. If he tries to interrupt, we'll handle it."
I nodded, trying to ignore the knot of anxiety in my stomach at the thought of facing Damon again. Tonight. During the most important ceremony of my life.
"It's time," Nina said gently. "Are you ready?"
Was I? Ready to bond with an Alpha I was still learning to know? Ready to become Luna of a pack that wasn't entirely sure they wanted me? Ready to face whatever challenges the night would bring?
I thought of the children at the spring falls, their absolute faith that I would stay. Of Kael standing on unsteady legs, reaching out to touch my face with wonder in his eyes. Of the letters on my desk from neighboring Alphas, acknowledging my position even as they questioned my worthiness.
"Yes," I said, lifting my chin. "I'm ready."
The girls helped me with the final touches—adjusting the gown, making sure the jewelry sat perfectly, checking that my hair was still in place. Then they stepped back, their faces showing a mixture of excitement and nervousness that probably mirrored my own feelings.
"You're going to be amazing," Emma said impulsively, giving me a quick hug. "Don't let anyone tell you otherwise."
I hugged her back, grateful for the support even from someone who'd been speculating about Ivory just hours earlier.
Nina offered me her arm, and I took it, letting her steady me as we prepared to leave my quarters. Through the bond, I could feel Kael—awake now, alert, waiting. The connection was still partially muted, like he was keeping some part of himself private, but his anticipation bled through clearly enough.
We walked through the pack house, past wolves who'd gathered to catch a glimpse of their future Luna. Some of them smiled and nodded with genuine warmth. Others watched with more reserved expressions, still uncertain, still comparing me to the woman they thought should be in my place.
I kept my head high, my expression composed, channeling every bit of Luna training Nina had drilled into me over the past week.
Outside, the sun was setting in a spectacular display of orange and gold, painting the sky in colors that promised the blood moon would be particularly powerful tonight. I could already see the moon rising in the east—larger than normal, tinged with red that would deepen as darkness fell.
The ceremonial clearing was a short walk through the forest, down a path lined with torches that had already been lit in preparation. As we walked, I could hear the murmur of voices ahead—guests and pack members gathering to witness the ceremony.
"Aria," Nina said quietly. "Whatever happens tonight—whether Damon shows up, whether the pack fully accepts you immediately, whether Kael stays human or shifts back—remember this: you've earned your place here. You belong in Shadowmere. Don't let anyone make you doubt that."
"Even Ivory?" I asked before I could stop myself.
Nina was quiet for a long moment. "Especially Ivory," she finally said. "She's my cousin and I love her. But she doesn't get to decide who Kael bonds with. And she doesn't get to make you feel less than you are."
We emerged from the forest into the ceremonial clearing, and my breath caught.
It was beautiful—decorated with more torches, with flowers and ribbons in silver and blue, with hundreds of wolves already gathered and waiting. A raised platform stood at the center, prepared for the bonding ritual. And standing on that platform, looking every inch the Alpha he was born to be, was Kael.
He was dressed in formal attire—black pants and a deep blue shirt that matched his pack's colors, his long hair pulled back to reveal the strong lines of his face. Those golden eyes found mine across the clearing, and I felt the bond surge with warmth and recognition.
He was still human. Still standing. Still waiting for me.
And whatever doubts I had, whatever challenges were coming, whatever Ivory or Damon or anyone else thought—none of it mattered in that moment.
Because I was walking toward my future.
And for better or worse, I was ready to claim it.
