ARIA

I made my way across the clearing toward Kael, my heart pounding so hard I was certain everyone could hear it. The torchlight flickered across his face, highlighting the sharp angles of his jaw, the intensity in those golden eyes that had never left mine since I'd emerged from the forest path.

He looked handsome—devastatingly so—in his formal attire. The deep blue of his shirt brought out the gold in his eyes, and seeing him standing there on two legs, fully human and waiting for me, made something flutter in my chest that had nothing to do with nerves.

But self-consciousness crept in as I climbed the steps to the platform. I was acutely aware of every eye on me, of the weight of the moonstones at my throat and wrists, of how the gown moved around my legs with each step. I scanned the crowd briefly, looking for Ivory's distinctive honey-blonde hair, but I didn't see her anywhere. Nina stood near the front, her expression encouraging and warm. Some of the pack members nearby smiled genuinely, clearly happy to witness their Alpha finally taking a mate.

But not everyone looked pleased.

I caught the scowls on several faces—older wolves, mostly, their expressions ranging from skeptical to openly disapproving. They couldn't exactly boo or object during a formal ceremony, not without committing a serious breach of protocol, but their displeasure was evident in the tight lines of their mouths, the crossed arms, the way they refused to meet my eyes.

More than I'd hoped. The majority, if I was being honest with myself.

My steps faltered slightly as I took in just how many wolves looked less than thrilled about this bonding. But Kael's hand extended toward me, steady and sure, and I focused on that instead. On him. On the choice we were both making, regardless of what anyone else thought.

Kael seemed completely oblivious to the disapproving faces in the crowd. His entire focus was on me, his expression a mixture of wonder and determination and something warmer that I didn't want to examine too closely yet.

"You look breathtaking," he said softly as I took his hand, his voice still carrying that rough edge that suggested he wasn't entirely used to speaking with a human throat yet. "Like moonlight given form."

"You clean up pretty well yourself," I managed, trying for lightness despite my nerves. "Human suits you."

His smile was slightly crooked, uncertain in a way that was oddly endearing. "I'd forgotten what it felt like. To stand like this. To hold someone's hand like this." His fingers tightened around mine, warm and solid and real. "Thank you for choosing this. For choosing me."

Before I could respond, Elder Marcus stepped forward to officiate the ceremony. He was one of the pack's oldest members, his hair completely white but his eyes still sharp and assessing. He'd been one of the voices I'd heard questioning my worthiness earlier, but his expression was carefully neutral now as he began the ritual.

"We gather beneath the blood moon," he intoned, his voice carrying across the clearing, "to witness the bonding of our Alpha Kael and Aria of Blackwood, who will become Luna of Shadowmere. This bond is sacred, eternal, binding these two souls together in service to the pack and to each other."

The words washed over me, familiar from the countless times Nina had made me practice. But hearing them spoken aloud, with Kael's hand in mine and hundreds of eyes watching, made them feel more real than any rehearsal had.

"Alpha Kael," Elder Marcus continued, "do you swear to protect your mate, to honor her as your equal, to lead your pack together with wisdom and strength?"

"I do," Kael said, his voice steady and sure. "I swear by the Moon Goddess and the blood moon above us to protect Aria, to honor her, to stand by her side as we lead Shadowmere together. She is my chosen mate, my Luna, my partner in all things."

The words were traditional, formal, exactly what the ceremony required. But there was sincerity in his tone that made my throat tight with emotion.

"Aria," Elder Marcus turned to me, "do you swear to protect your mate, to honor him as your equal, to lead your pack together with wisdom and strength?"

"I do," I said, surprised by how clear my voice sounded. "I swear by the Moon Goddess and the blood moon above us to protect Kael, to honor him, to stand by his side as we lead Shadowmere together. He is my chosen mate, my Alpha, my partner in all things."

I noticed what was missing from our vows even as I spoke them. No declarations of love. No promises of devotion beyond duty and partnership. Just the practical, political commitments that acknowledged what this really was—an arranged marriage we were both trying to make work.

It should have bothered me more than it did. Should have felt hollow or insufficient. But there was something honest about it, something that respected the reality of our situation without pretending to feelings we didn't yet have.

Maybe love would come later. Maybe it wouldn't. But we could build something real on respect and partnership and shared purpose.

Elder Marcus produced the ceremonial blade, its silver surface catching the moonlight. "The blood bond," he announced. "Let the mark of the Alpha and Luna be witnessed by pack and moon alike."

Kael took the blade first, his hand steady as he made a small cut across his palm. Then he handed it to me, and I did the same, trying not to wince at the sharp sting. Our blood welled up, dark and viscous in the torchlight.

We pressed our palms together, our blood mixing as the bond between us flared to life with new intensity. I felt it surge through me—his strength, his determination, his hope for what we could build together. And underneath it all, something deeper that I couldn't quite name but that felt like the beginning of something important.

"The marking," Elder Marcus said. "Let the Alpha claim his Luna, and let the Luna claim her Alpha, binding them forever beneath the blood moon's witness."
