The council chamber felt oppressive despite its size. High ceilings that should have made the space feel open instead seemed to press down on us, weighted by the severity of what was about to unfold. The five council members sat in elevated seats, their expressions ranging from stern disapproval to barely concealed curiosity. Behind them, the gallery was packed with observers—Alphas and high-ranking pack members from across the territories, all eager to witness how this unprecedented situation would be resolved.

Kael and I took our seats at the table designated for Shadowmere's delegation. Nina sat on Kael's other side, her expression carefully neutral despite the exhaustion I knew she was fighting. Across the room, in what could only be described as a defendant's position, Damon stood with his hands bound in silver chains.

He looked terrible. The fight with Kael had left him with a split lip, a black eye that was swelling shut, and what looked like bruised or possibly cracked ribs based on the way he held himself. His clothes were the same ones he'd shifted out of last night—torn, dirty, bloodstained. They hadn't given him fresh clothing or apparently much care beyond basic medical attention to keep him alive for trial.

But it was his eyes that caught me. They were fixed on me with an intensity that made my skin crawl, filled with a mixture of desperation, hope, and something that looked disturbingly like confidence. Like he still believed, even now, that I would somehow save him from the consequences of his actions.

The head council member—Alpha Morrison of the Highland Pack, the same one who'd written questioning my judgment—brought the proceedings to order with three sharp raps of a gavel.

"This emergency council session is convened to address the actions of Alpha Damon Cross of Blackwood Pack," Morrison announced, his voice carrying easily through the chamber. "The charges are as follows: unlawful disruption of a sacred bonding ceremony, assault on a pack member of neutral territory, bringing armed wolves into another pack's lands without permission, and issuing an unauthorized challenge during a protected ritual." He paused, his gaze moving to Damon. "How do you answer these charges?"

Damon straightened as much as his injuries allowed, and when he spoke, his voice was clear and steady. "I acknowledge that my timing was poor. I acknowledge that my methods were aggressive. But I do not acknowledge that my actions were unlawful. Ancient pack law gives any Alpha the right to challenge for an unmated omega during a bonding ceremony. I was exercising that right."

"Ancient pack law requires formal notice and acceptance before such a challenge can proceed," another council member—Alpha Chen of Riverside Pack—interjected sharply. "You provided no such notice. You stormed a ceremony with armed wolves and attacked pack members. That is not a legitimate challenge. That is an act of aggression."

"I sent a letter," Damon countered. "To Luna-designate Aria. Warning her of my intentions. Asking her to reconsider the bonding. That constitutes notice."

"A letter is not formal notice," Morrison said firmly. "Formal notice requires direct communication with the Alpha whose mate you intend to challenge for, along with specific terms and conditions. You provided none of that. Your letter was a threat, not a proper challenge."

Damon's jaw tightened, but he pressed on. "Regardless of the technical requirements, my intent was clear. I came to exercise my rights. If the security measures in place had functioned properly, if I had been allowed to reach the ceremony before the bonding was completed, none of the violence would have been necessary."

"Are you seriously suggesting this is our fault?" Kael's voice was dangerously quiet, but it carried through the chamber. "That we're responsible for your decision to attack?"

"I'm suggesting that if certain parties hadn't deliberately deceived me, the situation would have resolved itself peacefully," Damon said, and his gaze shifted to somewhere behind me. "If Ivory of Shadowmere hadn't lied about the ceremony location, if she hadn't set up a false site to delay my arrival, I would have been able to issue my challenge before the marking was completed. Her deception forced me to use more aggressive methods."

A murmur ran through the chamber. I turned to follow Damon's gaze and saw that Ivory had entered at some point, supported by Eliza. She was wrapped in a thick robe despite the warmth of the room, her face still swollen and bruised, but her expression was alert and focused.

"Let me understand your argument correctly," Morrison said slowly. "You're claiming that you were forced to assault a woman because she wouldn't help you disrupt a ceremony?"

"I'm claiming that her interference eliminated my ability to challenge peacefully," Damon corrected. "She promised to help me. Told me she didn't want the bonding to proceed any more than I did. Said she would ensure I arrived in time to issue a proper challenge before the marking. Instead, she deliberately led me to the wrong location, wasted my time with false assurances, and made it impossible for me to exercise my rights within the proper timeframe."

"So it's Ivory's fault you hit her?" Nina's voice was acid. "Her fault you grabbed her by the throat and threw her into a table hard enough to fracture her skull? Her fault you brought armed wolves into our territory and attacked during a sacred ceremony?"

"I'm saying that if she had kept her word, none of that would have been necessary," Damon said. "She made a choice to interfere. She accepted the consequences of that choice."

The casual way he dismissed nearly killing someone made my blood boil. But before I could speak, Ivory's voice rang out from the back of the chamber.

"Alpha Cross is correct that I made a choice," she said, her words slightly slurred from the swelling but still clear enough. "I chose to protect my Alpha and my pack from an unstable male who was threatening violence. I chose to delay his arrival so that a lawful bonding ceremony could be completed without interruption. And I would make that same choice again, knowing exactly what the consequences would be."

"You lied to me," Damon snarled, turning as much as his chains would allow to face her. "You promised to help. You shook my hand, looked me in the eye, and promised—"
