Requiem for the Godfather Chapter 8
The Family business couldn't wait.
Julian stood outside for a moment, then rushed back to the US to put out the fire.
I continued my life, eating and drinking happily.
The sheep in the pasture were growing fat.
I had enough money to last a lifetime.
A while later, I heard Julian had managed to turn things around and save the business.
But before I could get angry, I heard the Moretti Family was in trouble again.
This time, it was Scarlett.
Julian tried to force her to terminate the pregnancy and refused to pay her penalty fees for the breach of contract.
He wanted to cut ties completely.
Desperate and resentful, she copied my move.
She stole the Family’s confidential ledger and sold it to their enemies.
Two massive disasters caused by his personal life.
The result was inevitable: Julian was stripped of his status as heir.
The Moretti Family wouldn't fall, but it had nothing to do with Julian anymore.
His ambitious uncle took over the assets.
And immediately kicked Julian out of the Family.
Julian had suppressed his uncle for years. They hated each other.
Now that his uncle was in power, Julian's fate was sealed.
Some time later, I heard Julian was in a car accident.
Scarlett arranged it.
She took money from Julian's uncle to do it.
Julian only had himself to blame. He pushed two women to the edge, and they pushed him off the cliff.
The accident didn't kill him.
Cruelly, it took his legs.
He became a cripple.
Retribution.
Another autumn came. I returned to the US alone to visit the grave.
By chance, I saw Julian in a wheelchair.
He looked so disheveled I almost didn't recognize him.
To my surprise, he was selling fruit on the roadside in Little Italy.
That was probably his only source of income.
I felt no pity. My heart was terrifyingly calm.
The Mafia heir everyone once feared had died by his own hand.
I thought of Scarlett. After going bankrupt, she went to prison for intentional injury.
She would be out in two years.
I wondered what sparks would fly when those two reunited.
I didn't let Julian see me. I turned and walked away.
My mother's grave was clean. I had hired someone to maintain it.
Looking at the photo of the kind woman, my eyes grew wet.
I knelt down and whispered, "Mom, I'm living happily on my own now."
A gentle breeze brushed past my hair.
Like my mother answering me.
