The Alpha's Exiled Mate Chapter 230
Freya's POV
The evening air carried a chill as I stepped out of Jasper's apartment building, my two bags feeling heavier than their actual weight. Each step I took felt like dragging my feet through mud, the emotional exhaustion of the day weighing on me more than my physical belongings.
I paused at the entrance, taking a deep breath of the cool air, trying to clear my head. My life had once again been upended in the span of a single meal. Kaelin Brooks had made sure of that. The memory of her smug expression as she revealed my identity to Elena made my wolf stir with anger.
"Back to square one," I whispered to myself, adjusting the strap of my bag on my shoulder.
I hadn't gone more than a few steps when my senses prickled. The air shifted, carrying a scent that made my wolf stand at attention. Powerful, commanding, with notes of sandalwood and something inherently *him* - an Alpha's scent. But not just any Alpha.
My head snapped up, eyes scanning the street until they locked onto a sleek black car parked about fifty feet away. The passenger window was rolled down halfway, and even from this distance, I could make out the sharp profile of the man inside.
Thorne Grey.
My heart lurched in my chest, a confusing mixture of anger and something else I refused to acknowledge surging through me. What was he doing here? Had he come to witness my humiliation firsthand?
Kaelin's words from the restaurant echoed in my mind: *"I wonder if Alpha Grey would be interested to know how you managed to infiltrate Stone Group..."*
Had she already reported to him? Was that why he was here, to see me homeless and jobless once again? To gloat over how effectively he'd managed to ruin my life a second time?
I stood frozen for a moment, considering my options. I could walk away, find a hotel, and avoid another confrontation. That would be the sensible choice. But something hot and fierce burned in my chest, demanding satisfaction. My wolf, usually so cautious around Alphas, especially this one, was practically snarling with indignation.
Before I could second-guess myself, I was moving toward the car, my strides purposeful and quick. If Thorne Grey wanted to see me broken, he would be disappointed. I might be exiled, I might be jobless, but I still had my pride.
As I approached, I saw him straighten in the driver's seat. In the front passenger seat sat Mark, his ever-present Beta assistant, who looked surprised to see me marching toward them. Good. Let them be surprised.
Instead of stopping at the window, I yanked open the rear door and slid into the backseat, dropping my bags on the floor. The enclosed space immediately filled with Thorne's Alpha scent, making my wolf both agitated and oddly settled at the same time.
"Are you satisfied now?" I demanded, my voice low and tight with anger. "Did you come to see the results of your handiwork?"
Thorne turned slightly, his golden wolf eyes gleaming with intensity in the dim light of the car interior. His predatory gaze locked onto mine, unfiltered and penetrating without any barrier between us. His expression was unreadable, a complex mixture of emotions flickering behind those predator eyes.
"Or did Kaelin not give you all the details?" I continued, unable to stop now that I'd started. "Did you need to see for yourself how effectively she managed to expose me? How she made sure I'd be thrown out of yet another job, another life?"
Thorne's lips curved into a slight, unsettling smile. "You got into my car and immediately began accusing me. What exactly am I supposed to say to that, Freya?"
His calm demeanor only fueled my anger. "Don't play games with me, Thorne. Wasn't it enough to exile me? Did you have to send Kaelin to make sure I couldn't rebuild anywhere? Not even in Silverstone Pack?"
"Is that what Kaelin told you?" he asked, his voice dropping an octave lower. "That I sent her to expose you?"
"She didn't have to tell me," I spat. "Who else would have sent her? Who else would benefit from making sure I remain homeless and jobless?"
Thorne's eyes narrowed slightly. "Do you have any evidence that I instructed Kaelin to expose your identity? Or are you simply assuming that because it fits your narrative about me?"
His question made me pause. Did I know for certain that Thorne had orchestrated this? Kaelin had never explicitly said so. She'd implied it, certainly, but...
"Alpha, if I may," Mark spoke up from the front seat, his tone respectful but firm. "Ms. Riley, you're mistaken. Alpha Thorne didn't send Kaelin Brooks to expose you. In fact, he came here today because we received intelligence that Kaelin had entered Silverstone Pack territory. He was concerned about what she might do..."
I felt a flicker of doubt. The crescent mark on my neck tingled, a strange warmth spreading from it. I absently reached up to touch it.
"Mark," Thorne said, his voice carrying a note of warning. "You're talking too much."
Mark immediately fell silent, but the damage was already done. I looked between them, confusion replacing some of my anger.
"If you didn't send her, then why—"
"It doesn't matter why Kaelin was here," Thorne interrupted. "But her exposing your identity isn't necessarily a bad thing. You couldn't have hidden at Stone Group forever. Silverstone Pack would never have allowed a Grey Moon exile to remain in their territory indefinitely, especially not one working so closely with their Alpha."
His words stung with their truth, making my anger flare again. "So what do you want from me then? I left Moon Bay as Kaelin demanded. Now I'm being forced out of Silverstone territory too. What exactly do you and your future mate want? For me to disappear from the face of the earth?"
Thorne's eyes flashed, something dangerous and possessive flickering in them. "You've always known what I want, Freya. And you've always known what you want too. Stop pretending."
His words hit me like a physical blow. The car suddenly felt too small, too warm. The intensity of his gaze pinned me in place, making it hard to breathe. My wolf, usually so cautious, so controlled, surged forward with a force I couldn't contain.
I closed my eyes, trying to center myself, but it only made me more aware of his scent surrounding me, invading my senses. Before I could stop myself, I leaned forward, eliminating the space between us, and pressed my lips against his.
