The Alpha's Exiled Mate Chapter 268
Thorne’s POV
The Moon Crescent Court was filled to capacity, the tension in the air thick enough to cut with a claw. Word had spread quickly that the Alpha had called for an emergency public trial—and that the defendants included his own father and his future mate's family.
I sat on the raised dais at the front of the courtroom, draped in my formal Alpha robes. The silver embroidery caught the light, a reminder of the power and responsibility I carried. Below me, the chamber was divided—pack members on one side, the accused and their representatives on the other.
When the guards brought Kaelin in, her eyes widened with shock, darting frantically around the courtroom before landing on me.
"Thorne?" Her voice cracked with disbelief. "What is this? Why am I being treated like a criminal?" She struggled against the Beta guards, her composure cracking. "Tell them there's been a mistake!"
I kept my expression impassive, though my wolf stirred uncomfortably at her distress—real or manufactured.
Edward Brooks, Kaelin, and my father sat in the defendants' row, their expressions ranging from defiance (Edward) to calculation (my father). Seeing them there, I felt a momentary doubt. This trial would shake Moon Bay to its core.
But then my eyes found Freya, and something in my chest shifted. She sat with her brother Ethan in the witness section, her right hand still bandaged but her chin held high. The morning light filtering through the high windows caught in her hair. Despite everything she'd endured, there was no hatred in her eyes—only quiet determination and a dignity that made my wolf rumble with something like pride.
When our gazes met briefly, I felt a jolt of connection that I quickly masked. Today wasn't about my confused feelings; it was about justice. Still, I couldn't help noticing how she nervously tucked a strand of hair behind her ear with her left hand, a gesture so familiar it made my throat tighten with unexpected emotion.
"Members of Grey Moon Pack," I began, my voice carrying to every corner of the chamber, "we gather today to address grave accusations of corruption, conspiracy, and injustice that have plagued our community for three years."
The murmurs that had filled the room died down immediately. Every wolf present understood the severity of what was about to unfold.
"Three years ago, the Riley family was accused of collaborating with human hunters—the Silver Circle—and selling information that endangered werewolf lives. Based on testimony and evidence presented at that time, I sentenced Freya Riley to exile in the Forgotten Wilds."
I paused, letting the memory of that trial hang in the air. Many present had attended, had witnessed my harsh judgment.
"I have now received evidence proving that not only was Freya Riley innocent, but that the Brooks family committed the very crimes they accused the Rileys of, and that certain members of the Grey family were complicit in this deception."
Throughout the proceedings, I maintained the stern demeanor expected of an Alpha and Chief Justice. Yet I found my attention repeatedly drawn to Freya—the way she flinched almost imperceptibly when Edward Brooks spoke, how she unconsciously massaged her injured hand during particularly difficult testimony, the scent of wildflowers that somehow reached me even across the crowded chamber.
Gasps and growls erupted throughout the chamber. I allowed the noise to swell and then recede before continuing.
"The first witness I call is Lisa Wells."
A thin, nervous-looking woman approached the witness stand. Her scent carried fear, but determination as well.
"Mrs. Wells, please tell the court about your late husband's role at Silver Shackle Prison and what you witnessed regarding Freya Riley's treatment there."
Lisa nodded, her voice initially soft but growing stronger as she spoke. "My husband Carter was chief guard at Silver Shackle. He... he was ordered by Edward Brooks to increase Freya Riley's silver exposure beyond safe limits."
She pulled out a tablet and placed it on the stand. "My husband secretly recorded this meeting."
The court screens lit up with video footage showing Edward Brooks in the prison warden's office, giving explicit instructions: "Increase her exposure time daily. Beyond safe limits. I want her to feel pain every single day she's here."
The courtroom erupted in shocked exclamations. Silver exposure was a necessary security measure for dangerous criminals in werewolf prisons, but deliberately increasing dosage beyond safe limits was torture—a violation of our most basic laws.
"Order!" I commanded, my Alpha voice cutting through the chaos. When silence returned, I nodded to Lisa. "Continue."
"Carter became worried about what was happening," she explained. "He started documenting everything. When the internal investigation began four months ago, Edward Brooks had my husband killed to silence him."
Edward Brooks leapt to his feet. "This is slander! I demand—"
"Sit down," I growled, my Alpha energy flaring. "You'll have your chance to speak."
The next witness was Ethan Riley, who approached the stand with dignity despite the whispers that followed him. Many had believed him dead.
"Ethan Riley," I addressed him formally, "please explain to the court what your family discovered about the Brooks family prior to your supposed 'treason.'"
Ethan's voice was steady as he recounted finding evidence of Edward Brooks' dealings with the Silver Circle, how his father had prepared to expose these crimes at the council meeting, only for their evidence to disappear the night before—along with his parents.
"My family was framed for the exact crimes the Brooks family was committing," he concluded. "And they were aided by Alexander Grey, who saw an opportunity to eliminate a political rival."
All eyes turned to my father, who sat impassively, neither confirming nor denying the accusation.
As the evidence mounted against her, Kaelin's tactics shifted visibly. Tears welled in her eyes, streaming down her cheeks in perfect crystalline paths. The scent of her distress filled the air, but beneath it, I detected something else—calculation.
"This is absurd," she interrupted during Derek's testimony, her voice breaking. "These witnesses are clearly working with Freya Riley. She's manipulated them, just like she's manipulating you, Thorne!" Her eyes beseeched me. "You know me. Do you really believe I could do something this terrible?"
