Orion

Cold water crashed over me like a physical blow, yanking me from unconsciousness into a world of pain. My wrists burned where heavy chains suspended most of my weight, my feet barely touching the concrete floor. Every muscle in my body screamed in protest as I tried to orient myself in the dim, industrial space.

The warehouse around me was a monument to urban decay—rusted pipes snaked across the ceiling, broken windows filtered sickly yellow light through layers of grime, and the air reeked of motor oil and something I didn't want to identify.

"Rise and shine, Prince Charming."

Sera's voice cut through the darkness like broken glass. She stepped into the sickly light, and I barely recognized the woman before me. This wasn't the polished heiress I'd rejected—this was something feral wearing her face.

"Welcome to reality, Orion. No boardrooms here, no yes-men, and no dear wife to hide behind." She circled me slowly, a predator savoring the hunt. "Just you and me and the truth you've been running from your whole privileged life."

The knife in her hands caught the light as she examined it with loving attention. "Do you know what I realized? You've never actually suffered for anything. Never been denied, never been broken, never been made to understand what powerlessness feels like."

Her laugh was sharp enough to cut. "Until now."

I forced myself to hold her gaze, refusing to give her what she wanted.

"What's this, the silent treatment?" She laughed with genuine delight. "How fucking poetic. The great Orion Blackwell, reduced to sulking like a spoiled child."

Her voice dropped to a whisper. "But I know what you're thinking. You're calculating odds, planning escapes, believing someone's coming to save you." Her smile turned vicious. "No one's coming, golden boy. No one even knows where to look."

"Look at me, Orion." Her voice carried a mock-gentle tone that made my skin crawl. "Still playing the strong, silent hero? That's what daddy taught you, wasn't it? Oh wait—"

Her laugh was like acid. "Daddy disappeared when you were twelve, didn't he? Just vanished one day, left you to figure out how to be a man all by yourself."

Something ice-cold gripped my chest. She had no right to speak about him.

"And poor mama, dying so young, leaving her little boy to build an empire on nothing but daddy issues and abandonment." She circled closer, her voice dripping false sympathy. "Is that why you're so desperate to save everyone? Trying to be the father who ran away, the protector who failed?"

My jaw clenched involuntarily, rage building like pressure in a boiler.

"All those years building the Blackwell name back up, pretending you weren't just a scared little boy whose parents didn't want him enough to stay." Her eyes glittered with malicious joy. "And now look—you're going to fail them all just like daddy failed you."

The fury in my chest was white-hot now, but I kept my expression stone-cold. I wouldn't let her see how deep those words cut.

Sera's smile widened as she watched me struggle with composure. "Still not talking? How disappointing. But don't worry, darling. I have something much more interesting planned."

She pulled out her phone, showing me the message she'd prepared. "You see, I've invited your precious wife to join us. A little exchange—her life for yours. Romantic, don't you think?"

"You stay fucking away from her," I said, the words ripping from my throat despite my attempt at control.

"Oh, NOW you want to talk!" Sera's face lit up with vicious triumph. "All it took was threatening your replacement family. Because that's what they are, aren't they? Your desperate attempt to fix what daddy broke when he abandoned you."

She waved the phone tauntingly. "Poor Aveline probably thinks she married a strong protector. If only she knew she's just another orphan's security blanket. Another person you're going to fail to save."

Something snapped inside me.

"SHUT UP!" I roared, thrashing against the chains with such violence that the metal groaned. "Don't you dare speak her name! Don't you fucking dare!"

The fury that had been building exploded out of me like a dam bursting. Every muscle strained against my restraints as I fought to get at her, to make her pay for every poisonous word.

"There he is!" Sera clapped her hands in delight. "The real Orion! All that rage, all that helpless fury! This is what I wanted to see!"

"I'll kill you," I snarled, my voice raw with hatred. "I'll tear you apart with my bare hands, you psychotic bitch!"

"Will you now?" Her smile was radiant with triumph. "And how exactly will you do that from here? Face it, darling—you're exactly as powerless as you were at twelve years old."

The truth of her words hit me like ice water. The chains held firm, my struggles only tightening them further. I was trapped, helpless, completely at her mercy.

My rage collapsed into something darker, more devastating. The fight went out of me all at once, leaving only crushing despair.

"That's right," she whispered, watching my shoulders sag in defeat. "You can scream all you want, but nothing changes. You failed your father by not being enough to make him stay.  You failed your mother by simply existing – a burden that cost her everything, even her life. And now... you're going to fail her too. All because you couldn't see what was right in front of you."

I closed my eyes, the weight of my powerlessness settling over me like a burial shroud. She was right. Despite all my money, all my planning, all my desperate attempts to protect the people I loved—I was still that scared little boy who couldn't save anyone.

She stepped back, clearly frustrated by my refusal to completely break. "Before she arrives—and she will arrive, because you're both so disgustingly noble—we're going to have some quality time together."

Her fist connected with my ribs before I could brace for it, sending lightning bolts of agony through my torso. When I didn't cry out, she hit me again, harder.

"You know what I hate most about you?" Another blow, this time to my face. "You think your tragic backstory makes you special. You think being an orphan gives you some kind of nobility."

I bit my tongue to keep from making any sound that might satisfy her.

"But look at you now," she continued, her voice taking on that terrifying sing-song quality. "Helpless. Powerless. About to lose everything that matters to you, just like when you were twelve years old."

She called to someone in the shadows, and rough hands released me from the chains only to strap me into a metal chair with leather restraints. The change of position brought no relief—the tight bindings cut into my wrists and ankles.

Bright lights suddenly flooded the space, and I could see video equipment being set up around me. Camera lenses glinted like mechanical eyes, and the harsh illumination made everything feel surreal and nightmarish.

"I want to document this moment," Sera explained with sick pleasure. "For posterity. For Aveline. So she can see exactly what her husband looks like when he's stripped of all pretense."

The humiliation burned deeper than any physical pain. Not just being recorded in this state, but knowing that Aveline might see it. The thought of her watching me reduced to this—broken, helpless, unable to protect the people I loved—was worse than any torture Sera could devise.

"Smile for the camera, darling," she crooned, adjusting one of the lights. "Let's show your wife what the great protector looks like when he can't protect anyone."

As the recording equipment hummed to life, I closed my eyes and tried to retreat to somewhere she couldn't reach. In my mind, I held onto images of Aveline's laugh, of Ryan building his elaborate train sets, of quiet Sunday mornings when the world felt safe and manageable.

But even there, in the sanctuary of memory, Sera's voice followed me like poison.

"We're going to have such fun together, you and I. And when your replacement family arrives to save you..." Her laughter was like shattering glass. "Well, that's when you'll truly understand what abandonment feels like."
