The relief hits me so hard I have to grip the chair to keep from collapsing. My legs feel like water.

Nikolai makes a subtle gesture toward the window, and the red dot that's been my constant companion vanishes. Somewhere across the street, a sniper is packing up his rifle.

"You're actually letting me live?" The question comes out more vulnerable than I intended.

His expression becomes genuinely contemplative, like a philosopher wrestling with a moral paradox. "An excellent question, and one that places me in quite the uncomfortable position. Killing you would provide satisfying closure to this chapter of violence. But allowing you to live..." He spreads his hands eloquently. "That creates complications with my associates. You and your confederates have cost me dozens of elite operatives. You've humiliated my organization."

Before I can process this fully, the door crashes open. Dmitri stumbles inside, propelled by two men who look like they bench press motorcycles for fun. His face resembles a cubist painting—purple bruises blooming across his cheekbones, a split lip leaking blood, one eye swollen nearly shut. But his remaining good eye burns with pure fury as it finds Nikolai.

"If you've hurt her, I'll tear you apart with my bare hands," he snarls, fighting against his captors like a caged wolf.

Nikolai approaches with the measured pace of a matador facing a wounded bull. "My dear former protégé. You know, I've always maintained tremendous respect for your capabilities. Your strategic mind, your tactical innovations, your absolute refusal to surrender. But this persistent inability to show appropriate deference..." He shakes his head sadly. "You've murdered members of my family. Decimated my carefully cultivated network."

"And I'll finish what I started," Dmitri spits without an instant's hesitation.

Something lights up in the old man's eyes—pleasure, maybe even pride. "There he is. There's the Dmitri I trained. Completely irrational, catastrophically impulsive, absolutely refuses to back down from impossible odds." His smile becomes almost paternal. "But I confess, I find that arrogance intoxicating. Any man who aspires to true leadership needs that kind of unshakeable confidence."

"Release her. Now." Dmitri's voice drops to a growl that would make apex predators nervous.

"Of course. Our wager was clear—she defeated me fairly, she earns her freedom." Nikolai turns back toward me.

"What?" My stomach drops. "This isn't what we agreed upon!"

"Oh yes, the evolving terms!" Nikolai snaps his fingers like he's just remembered an amusing anecdote. "Originally, victory meant your personal freedom. But then you raised the stakes considerably. Your win secures his release, your loss meant death for both parties." He gestures toward me with mock sympathy. "Since you emerged victorious, that means he walks away unharmed, and you remain as my... guest. What happens during your extended stay becomes a matter for future discussion."

I stared at him, unyielding, but a prickle of dread traced its way up my scalp.

Dmitri's captors release him, and he immediately lunges toward Nikolai only to be restrained again before he covers three feet.

"Walk away," I tell him, putting every ounce of authority I can muster into my voice. "They won't hurt me. I'll be fine." The lie tastes like poison, but I need him to leave this room alive.

Dmitri's face contorts with anguish and rage. "Fuck that. I stay, you go home to your family."

Nikolai moves to stand directly in front of Dmitri, studying him with something approaching genuine affection. "Such touching loyalty. You know, if you do eventually ascend to a position of real authority, you'll certainly govern with more compassion than I ever have. More... nuanced diplomacy." He pauses thoughtfully. "Though I do wonder whether that impulsive temperament will get you killed long before you reach such heights."

"Go to hell," Dmitri growls. "I don't want your fucking throne. I just want you erased from existence."

"And therein lies the fundamental source of our disagreement." Nikolai steps back, his demeanor shifting to something almost philosophical. "But you know, during my conversation with your remarkable companion earlier, I mentioned that there might exist a solution beneficial to all parties involved."

My head jerks up so fast my neck cracks. "What solution?"

His smile transforms into something predatory and calculating. "Quite elegant, actually. You've both inflicted tremendous damage upon my operations—personnel losses, resource depletion, reputation degradation. To compensate for these injuries, I propose you both relocate permanently from New York and accept positions within my organization."

The suggestion detonates in the room like a grenade. Dmitri and I exchange looks of pure bewilderment.

"You want us to work for you?" I can barely form the words coherently.

"Consider it career advancement," Nikolai says smoothly, beginning to pace like a professor delivering a lecture. "I require fresh leadership to rebuild my Northern Europe operations. Who better than two individuals who've demonstrated they can outthink, outfight, and outmaneuver my existing personnel? Your talents are criminally wasted on these provincial conflicts."

He warms to his theme, gesturing expansively. "Naturally, this arrangement would demand absolute loyalty, complete discretion, and permanent geographic relocation. But the alternative..." He shrugs with elegant finality. "Well, we've already thoroughly explored those parameters."

I look at Dmitri, seeing my own shock reflected in his battered features. We came here to assassinate the Pakhan, and he's offering us executive positions.

"I require a decision," Nikolai says pleasantly, checking an expensive watch. "My patience, while considerable, operates within reasonable temporal boundaries."
