Fortunately, someone among them still had a conscience and called the police.

Ethan was taken in for investigation. Involuntary manslaughter. Two years.

Everyone blamed me—the jinx who'd ruined Ethan's promising life.

But what had I done wrong?

Two years later, Ethan was released.

He couldn't return to the Mitchell Corporation, but he was still a Mitchell.

The family fortune was enough for several lifetimes.

But the grass on mine and Claire's graves was probably pretty tall by now.

Why should the real culprit still be living well while two innocent women had to die?

"Aren't you happy?"

A mechanical voice suddenly spoke.

A blue crystal orb appeared before me.

"Ethan Mitchell will remember you for the rest of his life. He'll remember what he owes you and regret it forever. So why aren't you happy?"

"Why should I be happy?"

Setting aside that I'd already let go—even if I hadn't, I was dead. What difference would his lifetime of regret make?

"Who says you're dead?"

More shocking than the blue orb hearing my thoughts was: "I'm still alive?"

"Uh..."

It spun awkwardly. I sensed something was off.

"If I'm not dead, why am I like this?"

"You're the female lead of this world. Originally you were only supposed to be in a coma for a few years, but I accidentally used too much force. So you died."

Great. Just great. Wonderful.

According to the blue orb, my premature death was an accident, but the worldline kept moving forward. That's why I could only drift around Ethan.

Until the point in the original storyline when comatose-me was supposed to wake up, the world would begin correcting itself.

And we'd now reached that point.

Thinking of my cremated and buried ashes, I knew I couldn't go back to that body.

"So what now?"

"In this situation, I can send you back to any point in the past timeline to start over. But you can't do too much that's inconsistent with that time period, or you'll be eliminated directly."

I nodded. "Then send me back to the day I received my college acceptance letter."

Blue orb: "Are you sure?"

"I want to know—in the original plot, did Ethan and I end up together?"

"Of course. You're the female lead. The ending always has the female lead with the male lead."

I frowned, confused. If it was just going to crudely repeat itself, I'd rather be dead now.

"No, no, no! Why would you think that? The prince and princess living happily ever after—isn't that romantic?"

The orb spoke urgently.

Would we really be happy? I didn't know.

But I could no longer imagine myself with Ethan.

His two-timing had only made me angry.

But when he'd casually shoved Claire to her death that day—that had terrified me.

When love was gone, he could just do that?

Sensing my resistance, the blue orb sighed. "The world you're in is a female-oriented novel. Female-oriented!"

"So?"

I read novels sometimes. What was the difference?

"So YOU'RE the primary protagonist. This world unfolds from your perspective. As long as your will is strong enough, the author's intent will yield to you. I suddenly understood. One last question: "What about Claire?"

"Her death this time matched her death in the original book. But once a butterfly flaps its wings, the future becomes unpredictable."

"In other words, as long as a character's will is strong enough, any character has a chance to break through their original design."
