Beneath the Perfect Disguise, I Quietly Slipped Away Chapter 6
The next day, Connor suddenly asked Madison to present a work report.
That was the part of the work I had done.
Madison stammered and couldn't say a word.
"If you aren't even clear on your own job responsibilities..."
Connor was expressionless.
"Then you don't need to sit in that seat."
The conference room was dead silent.
Madison covered her mouth and ran out crying.
After the meeting, the break room exploded.
"Holy shit, did you see the boss's face today?"
"Do you think his 'favorite' has finally fallen out of grace?"
Everyone was talking at once.
I, making instant coffee, was called out.
"Aurora, why are you so quiet?"
"Girl, you're so strong. He humiliated you publicly back then, and you didn't even cry!"
I really didn't want to get involved in their drama.
But in this situation where everyone was gossiping—
Silence equaled betrayal.
I would be isolated.
So I laughed it off.
"I'm just a lowly worker. I can't compare to 'his favorite.'"
"Besides, couples fight, right? Office romances are always like this."
"Hey, don't push me—"
I looked down to steady my ceramic mug and added:
"Honestly? They look good together. I secretly ship them."
As soon as I said it, the break room fell into a weird silence.
I looked up.
And met—
Connor’s face, cold as frost.
Under everyone's sympathetic gazes, Connor, with a dark face, called me up to the top floor.
As soon as I walked in, he hugged me from behind.
I jumped.
Connor was usually very careful about this.
To prevent our relationship from being exposed, he forced me to get out of the car two blocks early every morning.
But now the office door was open. He had seven assistants who could walk in at any moment.
I used my hands and feet to push him away.
"Someone will come in!"
Connor started staring into my eyes again.
Like he wanted to dig something out from the depths of my gaze.
After a long while, he retracted his hand suspended in mid-air.
"Rory, Madison and I... there's nothing."
"Before—"
"Forget it. You can be angry. I understand."
"I will prove it to you."
I froze.
The promise I couldn't get by crying and screaming before the breakup was now given for no reason.
But now—
My flight leaves in seven days.
I don't want anything anymore.
