Chosen By The Cursed Alpha King Chapter 44
For a heartbeat it felt like I didn't hear what he just said. I blinked as I looked at him in both confusion and disbelief.
"Did you just say you had a mate?" I asked, wanting him to confirm what I just heard.
"Yes," he said, his voice giving no emotion, it was just blank.
"And she's dead?"
"I didn't say it for you to question me Emilia," He said, his voice cold and hard, filled with warning.
"But I need to—"
"Need to know what? That I wasn't able to protect her and let those filthy rogues tear into her like she was nothing." He spat, voice filled with rage but he did well hiding the pain.
"I didn't mean to..."
"Let's not talk about it, I just need you to give me a child, one who would bear my name once I'm gone."
"What do you mean by once you're gone?" I asked but silence fell between us as he just watched me.
"Answer me," I said in curiosity and impatience.
"It's not something I like to talk about Emilia," he said as he turned away from me and started walking towards the door but I stopped him.
"Wait," my feet moved on their own accord before I could stop them, as I ran in front of him and opened my hands like that could stop him if he really wanted to leave.
"I need to know what I'm signing up for," I said, my eyes searching his, but he gave nothing away.
"All you need to know is that I won't hurt you and as long as you're within these walls where I can protect you, you're safe. Don't try running, don't try anything stupid, then we're good."
I wanted to argue until I knew what he's really hiding, but I caught a look in his eyes although it was gone quickly. Talking about his dead mate was a touchy subject for him.
"I'll send a maid to bring you something to wear, you'll stay in my room from now on." He said and I thought he was finally going to leave but he stopped at the door and looked at me.
"Emilia..." he whispered and I looked at him expectantly wondering what he wanted to say.
"I don't have a heart." And just like that he was gone leaving me standing there confused.
I slowly walked back to the bed and sank on it, my heart heavy and my head filled with confusion.
I never knew the king had a mate.
And I don't know why I feel this way knowing that she's dead. There's this darkness in his eyes when he mentioned her like it broke his heart just talking about her.
It made me realize that there was more to this cold king that many people didn't know about.
But still—
It didn't mean that I should let my guard down. I'm sorry about his mate but I knew my story wouldn't be different from hers if I don't play my cards right. Maybe not killed by rogues, but death is still death.
I fell on my back looking at the ceiling with just one thought in my head.
Who exactly is the king?
Because there's something about him that screams danger and safety all at once.
Why?
**"What did she say?" Lucien asked as soon as he spotted me like he had been impatiently waiting to ask that question.
"She accepted the offer with a condition,"
"A condition? To the king?" He asked in disbelief, falling in step beside me as we took a turn to the hallway leading to my office.
"What condition might I ask?"
"Not to be treated like a prisoner. Which would be considered by only how she behaves, if she tries to run away again, I won't be so kind."
"About her father..." I stopped at his words as I turned to him.
"What about him?" I asked in curiosity.
"He's her real dad, everyone claims at some point she was the golden child until they found out she was without a wolf and then came their second daughter and they didn't see any use for her."
"So he made her and omega in her own pack."
"Yes, Your Majesty, that's the case,"
"And where is he now?" I asked as I continued walking,
"He left quite early with his family this morning, he must have sensed the tension in the meeting room and after seeing the way you treat his daughter, I'm thinking he's scared he's on your bad side."
I might not be any different from him but I'd rather die than give my daughter away for any reason.
"One more thing," he said as he opened the office door and I walked in, he followed, the door closing behind him.
"What is it?" I asked as I sat down on my chair, my eyes fixed on him.
"Dr Charles' daughter will be coming from England tomorrow for the funeral, and I think to take his place as the next doctor."
"Raina?"
"Yes, my king,"
"It's been so long," I couldn't help but say.
"Yeah, she told her father she wanted to see the world, only that I feel bad for her that she's coming back for his funeral."
"See to it that everything goes according to plan tomorrow,"
"Yes, Your Majesty," I turned to my screen to begin work when I remembered something.
"Did Soraya tell you anything about the prophecy?" I asked and Lucien shook his head.
"She said she took an oath not to say anything about it or else she'll die, and she vowed to protect you and break this curse so she can't die."
"Really? She mentioned some shit about a prophecy, tells me to stay away from Emilia and gives no further explanation?"
There was silence between us as my hands clenched on the table.
"You may leave,"
Lucien bowed in respect before quietly walking out of the room.
Prophecy? I couldn't help but scoff.
The moon goddess might enjoy playing games with me but enough is enough with her games.
Prophecy or not, I wasn't going to let anyone decide what I do with my life.
But when I closed my eyes, all I could see was Emilia's face... and the secret only I knew.
