Parents and Son Under Attack Chapter 11
Two years flew by. I was about to graduate high school. To completely leave the Grant family, I decided to study medicine abroad. My grades were excellent—the university could provide me a full scholarship.
Not until the acceptance letter was delivered to the house did the Grant family learn I planned to attend university abroad. I'd expected my saint-like parents to instinctively blame me for being presumptuous as before.
Unexpectedly, this time their attitude toward me underwent a complete reversal. Not only did they show concern for my well-being, they even praised me as a worry-free child.
Turns out that year of treating Ethan's illness and tutoring, plus spending considerable money pulling strings for a decent high school, had drained the Grant family coffers.
Hearing I'd been investing with the principal these years and even opening galleries, they shamelessly came to me, their not-yet-adult son, asking for money.
I looked with seeming amusement at Lily, who after graduating from a second-rate college was living at home doing nothing:
"The family has no money. Why isn't my sister working?"
Beside us, Ethan hurriedly defended his beloved:
"Lily is taking care of me... Originally she received several job offers but turned them all down for me..."
His address had changed from "sister" to "Lily." Seems this life, without my interference, Ethan and Lily had gotten together early.
I took out a bank card I'd prepared long ago. Since my rebirth, I'd kept accounts of every penny the Grant family spent on me. This card also included money I'd set aside for their retirement. I'd transferred it all at once.
"Dad, Mom, let me say this upfront. This money is for your retirement. If you spend even a penny on Ethan, consider me no longer your son."
Hearing my words, the atmosphere instantly tensed. Ethan covered his face with both hands, crying as if heartbroken beyond control, while Lily held him tightly.
Dad waved his hand dramatically, sweeping the bank card to the floor. Not satisfied, he even stomped on it a few times, pointing at my nose and cursing:
"Then get out! The Grant family has no such cold-blooded, heartless son!"
I didn't hesitate either. I took the signed notarized documents and left. At the door I could still hear Ethan and Mrs. Grant crying together, as if I were the villain who'd caused this family tragedy.
I still couldn't resist. My cold gaze swept across every hypocritical Grant family face:
"I'm cold-blooded and heartless? Have you noticed that since Ethan came, I haven't been in a single family photo?"
Mr. and Mrs. Grant stared blankly at the frame hanging in the center of the living room. They embraced Ethan and Lily, smiling benevolently. The photo left no space for me, just as this home left no place for me.
I dragged my exhausted body back to the dorm. Every interaction with the Grant family left me exceptionally irritable and uncomfortable. What surprised me was Sarah crouching at my door waiting.
She first jumped up excitedly, but when we actually faced each other she spun in place unable to speak. Finally, Sarah gently waved the acceptance letter in her hand at me:
"Caleb, let's go abroad together."
