Parents and Son Under Attack Chapter 5

When summer vacation came, my sister Lily Grant, who usually studied abroad, also returned home to meet the legendary new brother, Ethan Grant.

Just like in my previous life, Lily fell head over heels for Ethan the first time she saw him. Because Ethan had wrapped a cloth around his face, groping around the living room like a blind person, then "coincidentally" falling into Lily's arms at their first meeting.

Ethan's handsome face flushed red as he said shyly:

"Because I don't know when I'll go blind, I want to learn to live in darkness first so I won't be a burden to Mom, Dad, and my sister in the future."

Ethan really knew how to talk, subtly excluding me, the brother, while hinting to Lily that he and I didn't get along.

Impulsive Lily was shocked speechless. The boy before her was as pitiable as a terminally ill male lead in a Korean drama. She immediately vowed in her heart to take care of Ethan for life.

Mom and Dad suggested we all go out for a nice day together as a welcome for Lily. I didn't want to go. Their happy family of four had nothing to do with me, the willful, jealous, domineering unloved youngest son.

But Ethan had to needle me. He hid pitifully in a corner, eyes reddening:

"Mom, Dad, you should just take Sister and Brother. I'll ruin your family reunion..."

Lily panicked, gently wiping Ethan's tears:

"Why would you say that? We're already a family!"

Ethan made a show of dodging Lily's hand while casting timid glances at me, as if making a silent accusation.

Lily immediately shot me a fierce look:

"Caleb Grant! Why are you bullying Ethan? How did you become like this? You weren't like this before!"

What had I become? The ones who'd changed were them. Mom who used to think of me first, Dad who was strict but gentle, and my sister who always protected me—they'd all become people I didn't recognize.

I just smiled coldly, looking directly into Lily's eyes:

"Why don't you ask Ethan how I bullied him? I gave him my room. What more does he want?"

Ethan was flustered by my question, instinctively avoiding my gaze. His frightened appearance only inflamed Lily's protective instincts more. She yelled at me regardless:

"It's that superior attitude that hurts him! Ethan just joined our family. It's only natural you should accommodate him!"

Suddenly I'd become an enemy to be condemned, while Lily was the queen protecting her prince.

My saint-like parents only played favorites:

"Caleb, your sister rarely comes home. Don't make her angry. Quickly apologize to your sister and Ethan."

I surveyed this family biased to the South Pole, answering firmly word by word:

"He can have whatever he wants because I don't care, but an apology? No way!"

After dropping that line, I locked myself in my room, shutting out Lily's impotent screaming. Afterward, the happy family of four had a wonderful day. No one remembered to call and check on me or bring me food.

If it were the old me, I'd have felt so wronged, starving myself or running away to make Mom and Dad feel guilty. But now I knew such actions were futile and only hurt my own body.

I cooked myself a hearty bowl of instant ramen while spreading out study guides I'd secretly bought.

Since my rebirth, I'd worked extremely hard to improve myself, not daring to slack off for a single day. This life, I would carve out my own path through my own efforts. After careful consideration, I decided to study medicine.
