Turns out Ethan's vision had steadily declined until he was almost completely blind. Unable to bear such a blow, he'd attempted suicide multiple times, stopped by Lily each time.

"Caleb, you're studying medicine now and your mentor is so amazing. You can definitely cure Ethan!"

Mrs. Grant threw herself on me crying her eyes out, constantly yelling that if Ethan was gone, she didn't want to live either. After understanding the situation, the professor looked troubled. Ethan's disease was rare in the world with extremely few cases. There were no successful precedents for curing it.

Of course Lily and Mrs. Grant had heard this before. Having taken Ethan to seek treatment for so many years, how could they not understand? But they'd clearly lost their rationality, shoving and pushing me regardless.

"How can you be so heartless? Will you watch Ethan die?"

"I said he bullied and excluded Ethan since childhood. How could he be willing to help!"

"Can't even save your own family. What's the point of studying medicine? A selfish person like you isn't qualified to be a doctor!"

Because the professor especially valued me, many people had always resented me. Now the office was surrounded by people watching the show, pointing and whispering at my family, eager for me to be kicked out by the professor over this.

Without hesitation, I slapped Lily. Half her face instantly swelled, scaring both Mrs. Grant and the people at the door into silence.

"I'm selfish? I'm heartless? I bullied and excluded Ethan since childhood?"

"You all said Ethan was pitiful, so I gave him my room to sleep in and lived in the maid's room myself. You said Ethan needed more care, so from age seven I went to school alone. You said Ethan needed treatment, so from childhood I got scholarships, not needing a penny of family tuition. Ethan sneezed and the whole family escorted him to the hospital. I had a 102-degree fever and no one cared."

"You only went to Ethan's parent-teacher conferences, only remembered Ethan's birthday. Since childhood, whatever Ethan wanted I had to let him have. I even let him have Mom and Dad—what more do you want? Yes, he's pitiful, but his tragic background isn't my fault. His serious illness isn't my fault!"

"You say I'm not qualified to be a doctor. Since I resolved to study medicine, I bought every study guide myself. I got into school myself. I found teachers myself. All these years you never cared about me once. Are YOU qualified to be a mother?"

Two lifetimes of grievance erupted at that moment. I spoke every word I'd kept hidden in my heart all these years. The onlookers who'd been pointing at me immediately turned to condemn Mrs. Grant and Lily. Mrs. Grant seemed to age instantly. All these years she might have thought she'd balanced things perfectly, but one bowl had long run dry while the other overflowed.

After venting my emotions, I only felt physically and mentally refreshed. Only then did I remember to call security to throw them out. The hospital restored its peace, but from that day on, colleagues' gazes at me seemed to hold more awe.
