The Athena Gambit Chapter 11
Chapter 11: The Accusation
The boardroom was a cavern of polished wood and cold, judgmental light. Ivy had expected a technical review, a final deep dive into "Athena's" architecture before the funding decision. Instead, she walked into an ambush.
Selena Vance stood at the head of the table, a projector screen glowing behind her. She didn't smile as Ivy entered; her expression was one of grave, theatrical concern. Caleb was not present, but his influence was a ghost in the room, a palpable pressure.
"Ivy, thank you for joining us," Selena began, her voice dripping with a false sincerity that set Ivy's teeth on edge. "We've convened this special session to address some… deeply troubling concerns that have come to light."
Ivy took her seat, her posture rigid. She said nothing, her mind racing, assessing the trap.
"As you know, the integrity of our proprietary technology is paramount," Selena continued, clicking a remote. The screen lit up with a series of email logs and server access records. They were expertly forged, but to an untrained eye, they looked damning. They showed communication between an encrypted account and an IP address registered to Aethel Tech. They showed data transfers timed just before Aethel announced a new, suspiciously similar AI initiative.
"The evidence suggests a severe breach of confidentiality," Selena announced, her voice rising with feigned outrage. "It appears that key components of the 'Athena' project have been leaked to a direct competitor. The timing, the nature of the data… it points to an inside job."
The other board members shifted uncomfortably. Their eyes, once respectful or merely indifferent, were now sharp with suspicion, fixed on Ivy.
Ivy's blood ran cold. This was Caleb's move. Not just to sideline her, but to destroy her reputation completely. To make her unhireable. To ensure that even if she left, she would carry the stain of industrial espionage. It was a scorched-earth tactic.
Selena paused, letting the accusation hang in the air like poison gas. Then she delivered the final blow, her gaze locking onto Ivy's with venomous triumph.
"And given that you, Dr. Thorne, are the only person with both the deep technical knowledge and, according to these records, the opportunity to orchestrate this leak… the board has no choice but to place you on immediate administrative leave, pending a full investigation. We will be seeking legal counsel regarding criminal charges."
The words "criminal charges" echoed in the silent room. Ivy felt the walls closing in. This was no longer a corporate skirmish. This was a fight for her freedom, her future, her very name.
She looked around the table at the faces of her colleagues, her superiors. They had already judged her. The perfect, silent wife had been recast as the treacherous, greedy employee.
The old Ivy might have broken down. She might have pleaded, protested her innocence to deaf ears.
The new Ivy simply stared back at Selena, her face a mask of icy calm. The fury inside her was so absolute it had become a still, cold core. They had thrown down the gauntlet.
Now it was her turn to pick it up.
