Chapter 5: Ghosts of a Promise

The flicker of hope from Liam's response was a precarious thing, a small flame guttering in a drafty room. Ivy clung to it as she navigated the minefield of her own home that evening. Caleb was already there, pouring a glass of expensive Scotch.

"Rough day, darling?" he asked, his voice laced with a concern that now felt like a layer of veneer over rotten wood.

"Just… a lot on my mind with the final review coming up," she said, her voice carefully neutral. She moved to the kitchen, needing the distance, the mundane task of preparing dinner as a shield. The scent of his cologne, once a comfort, now made her stomach clench.

As she chopped vegetables, the rhythmic sound against the cutting board became a metronome for her churning thoughts. Her eyes drifted to the living room, to the large, framed photograph from their wedding day. There they were, bathed in golden-hour light, laughing, her head thrown back in pure, unadulterated joy, his arm around her, pulling her close as if he'd never let go.

The memory, unbidden and vivid, washed over her.

Five years ago. The air was warm, smelling of roses and salt from the nearby ocean. She was in her simple ivory dress, her heart feeling too big for her chest. Caleb, handsome and earnest in his tailored suit, held both her hands.

"Ivy," he'd said, his voice thick with emotion, his gaze intense. "I promise you, I will always be your biggest supporter. Your dreams are my dreams. I'll be the foundation you build your empire on. I'll make sure the world sees the genius I see every day."

Tears of happiness had streamed down her face. In that moment, she had believed him with every fiber of her being. She had just landed a lucrative job offer from a tech giant on the other side of the country. It was her dream role. But Caleb's own startup was at a critical juncture, needing his full presence in the city. He never asked her to stay. He just laid out his vision for their future, together, here.

"Your turn will come," he'd whispered that night, holding her. "Let me get this fund off the ground, secure our future, and then I'll support you 100%. You can do anything you want."

She had chosen him. She had turned down the offer. She told herself it was a temporary delay, a partnership. A year later, when a similar opportunity arose, he was in the middle of a major deal. "Just a little longer," he'd said. And she, wanting to be the supportive partner, had agreed. Again. And again.
