For Sophie, the renovation of the Victorian house on Elm Street was their love story, written in blueprints and mortar. Every choice—the wide-plank oak floors, the exact shade of cream for the walls, the antique brass fixtures—was a testament to the future she was building with Mark. It was perfect. Until the champagne bubbles at her best friend’s wedding caught a fleeting, intimate glance between Mark and the maid of honor—a glance that held a secret. In that moment, a hairline crack appeared in the perfect glass sphere of her life, and through it, a chilling doubt began to seep in.

The late afternoon sun streamed through the large, newly installed bay window, illuminating dust motes dancing in the air like tiny fairies. The scent of fresh paint and sawdust was thick and sweet. Sophie ran a hand over the smooth, cool surface of the marble kitchen island, a satisfied smile touching her lips. It was coming together, better than she had ever imagined.

“The light in here is just… perfect,” she said, her voice echoing slightly in the empty space.

Mark stood by the fireplace, scrolling through his phone. He looked up, his handsome face breaking into the easy, charming smile that had won her over two years ago. “It will be, once the furniture arrives. The realtor said the comps in this neighborhood have gone through the roof. This place is going to be the envy of everyone we know.” He walked over, wrapping an arm around her waist and pulling her close. “Because of you, of course. Your vision.”

Sophie leaned into his embrace, savoring the moment. This house was her masterpiece. As an interior designer, she had poured every ounce of her talent into it, viewing it as the ultimate expression of their shared life to come. But sometimes, a tiny, nagging voice whispered that Mark saw its completion more as a checkbox on a list of life achievements—the perfect job, the perfect fiancée, the soon-to-be-perfect house.

“I was thinking,” she said, turning to face him. “For the master bedroom, maybe we could do a feature wall with that reclaimed wood we saw. Add some warmth, some history.”

Mark’s phone buzzed in his hand. He glanced down, his thumb swiftly typing a response before he looked back at her, his smile still in place but not quite reaching his eyes. “Sure, whatever you think best, Soph. You’re the artist. I just want it finished. I want to start our life here with you.” He kissed her forehead. “The sooner the better.”

There it was again. A subtle pressure, a gentle but persistent push towards the finish line. She pushed the thought away. He was just excited. They both were.

“The plumber is coming tomorrow for the final fixture install in the main bath,” she said, pulling out her own tablet to check the schedule. “Then it’s just the final cleaning and we’re done.”

“Excellent,” Mark said, his attention already drifting back to his screen. “I’ve got that merger meeting all week, so just… handle it, yeah? You’re so much better at this domestic stuff than I am.”

Domestic stuff. The phrase lightly pricked at her. It diminished the months of creative labor, the endless negotiations with contractors, the sheer work it had been into a triviality. But she brushed it off. He was stressed with work. He was providing for their future. This was her contribution.

“I’ll handle it,” she said softly, looking around the sun-drenched room. For a moment, she saw not just a house, but a home—filled with laughter, with love, with a future. She silenced the nagging voice. It was perfect. Everything was perfect.
