The Blueprint of a Lie Chapter 16
Chapter 16: The Stage is Set
The day of the bank's final signing appointment arrived, cloaked in an eerie, deceptive calm. Mark was practically vibrating with a poorly concealed, smug anticipation. He fussed with his tie in the hallway mirror, a picture of successful man about to claim his prize.
"Big day," he said, catching Sophie's eye in the reflection. "The final hurdle. Then it's all ours." The word ours landed with a thud of finality. He believed it. He truly believed he had gotten away with it.
Sophie nodded, adjusting the strap of her bag. She wore a simple, elegant navy dress—professional, unassuming, armor for what was to come. "Yes," she said, her voice neutral. "A big day."
The conference room at the bank was sleek and impersonal, all glass and polished wood. The loan officer, a cheerful woman named Brenda, had the final documents ready. Mark beamed, accepting a pen.
Sophie sat quietly, her hands folded in her lap. Her lawyer, Sarah Jenkins, was seated next to her, a silent, formidable presence. Mark had barely acknowledged her, assuming she was there for "moral support."
"Just need both signatures here, and here," Brenda said, pointing to the dotted lines.
Mark leaned forward, pen poised. This was it. The moment he would legally cement his theft.
"Actually," Sophie's voice cut through the room, clear and steady. Everyone looked at her. Mark's smile faltered. "Before we proceed, there's a matter of ownership that needs to be clarified."
Brenda blinked. "Ownership? The title search was clear. The property is in Mr. Evans's name."
"On a deed recorded three weeks ago, yes," Sarah Jenkins said, opening her briefcase. "Prior to that, the property was held jointly by my client and Mr. Evans during the construction phase. We have evidence suggesting the transfer of title was procured by fraud."
Mark's face went pale. "Sophie, what is this? This is not the time—"
"This is exactly the time, Mark," Sophie said, meeting his gaze. The fear in his eyes was a balm to her soul. "The time for lies is over."
Sarah slid a copy of the property record across the table to Brenda. "As you can see. And we have filed a lis pendens with the county courthouse this morning, placing a cloud on the title pending the outcome of our lawsuit."
The cheerful atmosphere in the room evaporated, replaced by a tense, icy silence. Brenda's professional demeanor shifted to one of grave concern. "A lawsuit? Mr. Evans, I... we cannot proceed with the loan disbursement under these circumstances. The title is no longer clear."
Mark stared at Sophie, his expression a mixture of shock, fury, and dawning horror. The stage had been set, not for his triumph, but for his downfall. The performance was just beginning, and he was no longer in control of the script. Sophie held his gaze, her own expression one of cold, calm resolve. The hunter had just walked into the trap.
