Chapter 11: The Ghost in the Machine Fights Back

The gallery event had been a special kind of torture, but it had also solidified Sophie’s resolve. Mark’s smugness was a catalyst, hardening her cold anger into a razor-sharp weapon. The time for passive evidence gathering was over. It was time to go on the offensive, to turn his own tools against him.

Her target was his primary work laptop, a sleek, silver fortress he carried with him everywhere. It was protected by biometrics and corporate-level encryption. But Mark, for all his cunning, was a creature of habit. Every Sunday morning, he claimed the dining table for “deep work,” a ritual that involved a pot of strong black coffee and several hours of uninterrupted focus.

This Sunday, the routine unfolded as usual. Sophie heard the grinder whir, the rich scent of coffee soon permeating the apartment. From the living room, pretending to be engrossed in a design magazine, she watched him settle at the table, laptop open, his back to her. The rhythmic clack of his keyboard began.

Her heart hammered against her ribs. This was it. She needed a reason to get close, to see his screen.

She waited ten agonizing minutes, then stood and stretched. “Mark? I’m going to run to the farmer’s market. Do we need anything?” she called out, her voice carefully casual.

A muffled “No, I’m good, thanks!” came from the dining room. Perfect. He was engrossed.

She made a show of grabbing her keys and tote bag, opening and closing the front door with a firm click. But she didn’t leave. She slipped off her shoes and stood frozen in the entryway, listening. The typing continued, uninterrupted.

Silent as a shadow, she padded back toward the dining room. Peering around the corner, she saw his back was still to her, his attention wholly on the screen. On the table, next to his coffee mug, lay his smartphone—the key. He often used it to authenticate logins for convenience.

She took a steadying breath and stepped into the room. “Forgot my list,” she murmured, as if to herself, heading for the kitchen counter.

Mark started, turning slightly. “Jesus, Soph, you scared me.” He was annoyed, but not suspicious. His fingers paused over the keyboard.

“Sorry,” she whispered, her eyes scanning the table. There. A small, sleek external hard drive was plugged into his laptop. The drive? Her pulse skyrocketed. She pretended to fumble in a drawer near the door, her movements slow and clumsy to buy time. Her gaze was locked on his laptop screen. It was open to an email client—not his corporate account, but a generic webmail service. The inbox was visible.

And there, at the top, was an email from Emily. The subject line was a punch to the gut: “Re: Final Walkthrough – Elm Street.”

Bingo.

She saw his hand move toward the phone, likely to dismiss a notification. In that split second, as his attention shifted from her to the screen and then to the phone, she acted. With a calculated stumble, she bumped hard against the table.

“Oh!”

His coffee mug wobbled, sloshing dark liquid onto the polished wood. Mark cursed, grabbing for napkins.

“I’m so sorry! So clumsy!” Sophie cried, her voice full of feigned panic. In the flurry of activity, as he mopped up the spill and she handed him napkins from the box, her thumb brushed against the power button on the external drive. The tiny light on it flickered and died. She prayed the dismount hadn’t corrupted anything.

“It’s fine, just… be careful, Lily,” he said, irritation clear now. The moment was broken. His secret was safe, for now. But hers was not.

“I’ll let you work,” she said, backing out of the room, her performance complete.

Outside, leaning against the closed front door, she finally allowed herself to breathe. She hadn’t gotten the files, but she had seen the enemy’s command center. She had confirmed the active deception. And she had planted a seed of doubt—a clumsy fiancée who disrupted his workflow. He would be more careful, but he wouldn’t see her as a threat. Not yet. The ghost had just confirmed the machine was operational, and she now knew exactly where to aim her next strike.
