Chapter 7: The First Trench

The air inside the half-finished house was thick with dust and the scent of betrayal. Sunlight streamed through the uncovered windows, illuminating floating particles that seemed to hang suspended, much like Sophie’s life. She led Liam to the kitchen, the heart of the home she had designed, now feeling like the epicenter of a crime.

She placed the folder on the marble island—the same surface she and Mark had chosen together. Opening it, she laid out the evidence with a clinical precision that belied the tremor in her soul. The property record. The bank statements with their damning transfers.

Liam’s face, usually creased with the good-natured lines of a man who worked with his hands, grew hard as he scanned the documents. He let out a low whistle, a sound of pure disgust. “I’ve seen some shady things in this business, Sophie, but this… this is a whole new level of low.” He looked up at her, his eyes searching hers. There was no pity there, only a fierce, solid anger. “He used you. He used your talent to build a palace for his… for her.”

The word mistress hung unspoken in the air, but its shape was clear. Sophie nodded, a sharp, jerky motion. “He did. And I signed the papers that helped him do it.” The admission was bitter on her tongue.

“Don’t,” Liam said, his voice firm. He tapped the property record. “This isn’t about a faulty wire or a leaky pipe. This isn’t even about the house, not really.” He met her gaze, his own steady and clear. “This is about justice. He doesn’t get to do this. Not to you.”

Justice. The word landed in the hollow space inside her with a resonant thud. It was bigger than revenge, more profound than anger. It was what she truly needed—not just to wound him, but to rectify the wrong, to reclaim what was hers in the eyes of the law and the world.

“I have a lawyer,” Sophie said, her voice gaining strength from his conviction. “A good one. But we need more. We need to know everything. His schedule, his access to this place… if they’re using it.” The thought made her nauseous, but it had to be faced.

Liam’s mind was already working, practical and strategic. “I’m the contractor. I have the master keys. I have legitimate cause to be here for ‘punch list’ items for weeks. I can keep an eye on things. See who comes and goes.” He paused, thinking. “The security system you specified… it’s top-notch, but it’s not activated yet. We could… expedite that. For your ‘peace of mind’ as the designer.”

A grim smile touched Sophie’s lips. He understood. He was already thinking like a co-conspirator. “Yes. My peace of mind.” She looked around the beautiful, empty shell. “I need to know what happens here when I’m not around.”

“Consider it done,” Liam said, his tone leaving no room for doubt. He folded his arms, a solid, reliable presence in the cavernous room. “You focus on building your case with the lawyer. I’ll be your eyes and ears here. We’ll get him, Sophie. He’s not going to get away with this.”

In that moment, the weight on her shoulders felt fractionally lighter. She wasn’t just a betrayed woman raging against the machine. She was a general, and she had just secured a key ally on the battlefield. The first trench in this war of attrition had been dug, and for the first time since she saw that property record, Sophie felt a flicker of something other than cold fury: the faint, steady warmth of hope.
