Karl

“Karl, the security angle is strong,” Sarah insists, pushing a strand of her brown hair behind her ear. “It resonates with the pack’s current concerns. Why did you remove it from your final draft?”

I pause, my fingers tapping on the desk.

“I know, Sarah, but…” My voice trails off as I consider her words, my mind racing back to those moments of volunteering, of genuinely connecting with the pack. Those moments meant more to me than any display of power ever could.

That’s why I decided last night to change my speech at the last minute. It was all ready to go, but I pulled back and told Sarah about my changes. That’s why she’s here now; to scold me.

Sarah leans forward, her eyes meeting mine from across my desk. “But what, Karl? You need to be decisive here. You shouldn’t be making major changes last minute.”

I take a deep breath, my decision crystallizing in my mind. It’s the morning of the press conference, and Sarah and I are having one last meeting. One last meeting right before the storm hits. One last meeting before I have to go head-to-head against my very own brother.

I hardly slept last night, though; I mean, how could I?

No matter how hard I tried, I couldn’t stop tossing and turning, thinking about how today will pan out. To think that I have to compete with my brother for the title of Alpha, a position that I have held for years now… it all feels a little convoluted.

And I, honestly, blame Gianna. But my brother simply refuses to see reason; so he’s not entirely without blame, either. He should know better than to shack up with a traitorous wretch like her.

But thoughts of my brother weren’t all that was keeping me awake last night.

It’s almost the full moon, and my wolf is roiling inside of me. With our mate just a few doors down, we’re both restless. I can’t stop thinking about her, about the way her skin looked under the light of the moon that night. She was so warm against the cold of the snow when we made love in the forest.

She was so soft, too. It’s like I can still hear the sounds of her soft moans. My name, a name that I’ve always hated, sounded so delicious on her lips. That was the last time we slept together, and although it was just a couple of weeks ago, it feels like forever now.

God, I want her again. But she decided that it was ‘best’ if we removed the physical aspect of our relationship. She wanted some time to ‘think’.

I don’t want to think. I want her.

I want to win this stupid election, and I want my Luna. And with the full moon looming close, I’m on the verge of just taking what I want… within reason, of course. But lately, I’m at the end of my rope.

I know she wants me; I can see the way she blushes and squirms when she looks at me. She wants me badly. She just doesn’t want to admit it, and she’s got this idea in her head that it’s wrong for us to sleep together.

But why should it be wrong? We’re mates, and we love each other. And dammit, she’s my Luna. Maybe it’s the full moon talking, but I’m tired of waiting for her to realize that.

“Karl? Don’t space out on me.”

Sarah’s voice snaps me back to reality, and I blink to dispel the dirty thoughts that have entered my mind.

“I want to change the campaign promise,” I declare, the words feeling right as they leave my lips. “I want to focus on improving the quality of life in the pack. More tourism, more recreation, better funding for community programs. That’s what really matters in this day and age.”

Sarah’s eyebrows shoot up in surprise. “That’s a significant shift, Karl. Are you sure?”

“Yes,” I reply firmly. “It’s who I am. It’s what I believe in. And besides, our pack is just as strong as any. We’ve placed an emphasis on security for decades. I think we can manage a bit of a shift.”

After a moment of hesitation, Sarah nods, closing her laptop with a soft click. She looks a bit exasperated, but I know she’ll handle it. I’m planning on giving her a nice bonus at the end of the month, anyway.

“Okay,” she says with a sigh. “I’ll update the necessary information, and I’ll see you at the press conference. Good luck today, Karl.”

With that, she stands, gathers her belongings, and exits the office, leaving me alone with my thoughts.

I straighten the papers on my desk, my mind still racing. This change feels like a risk, but it’s a risk worth taking. It’s a promise I can stand behind wholeheartedly.

And honestly, I have Abby to thank for helping me realize what really matters.

Glancing at the clock, I realize it’s time to get ready. The driver is already waiting downstairs. I need to be the image of a confident, capable Alpha today, especially with Abby—my Luna—by my side.

Quickly, I head to my bedroom to dress. I pull out the suit that was carefully tailored to my measurements, which I just picked up yesterday.

As I button up my shirt, though, my thoughts drift to Abby once again. I wonder how she’s feeling about today, about being in the public eye again as my Luna.

And I wonder how she’ll look in her dress. How she’ll feel in it, too.

“Fucking full moon,” I growl, snapping the curtains shut and taking a deep breath. “Focus, Karl. Focus.”

A little while later, I’m standing in the hallway. The driver is waiting outside, and in just a short amount of time, I’ll be standing in front of rows of reporters and cameras. I’ve got my speech tucked away in my pocket, but I hope that I won’t need to use it. I want to remember it by heart.

“Abby, it’s time!” I call up the stairs, my voice echoing in the spacious hallway. She’s a little late, but I just saw the makeup artist leave a few minutes ago, so I’m sure she’s ready.

While I wait, I turn toward the mirror that’s hanging in the hallway. I straighten my tie, rehearsing my speech under my breath.

“I am here today, as your dedicated Alpha, for now and forever…”

Suddenly, the sound of heels clicking on the stairs catches my attention. I turn, and my breath catches in my throat.

“Holy shit,” my wolf growls.

Abby is descending the staircase, and she looks absolutely stunning. The dress she’s wearing hugs her figure gracefully, its color accentuating her eyes. Her hair falls in soft curls around her shoulders, and her makeup is just enough to bring out her natural beauty without being too much.

In that moment, time seems to stand still. She’s the perfect picture of a Luna, but more importantly, she is Abby—the woman who has been the fixation of my desires for what feels like an eternity.

She stops in front of me, smoothing down the front of her dress with a nervous look on her face.

“Well? How do I look?”
