Abby

Two lines.

My hands shake as I stare down at the test in my hands. Two lines—pregnant. No, more than two lines, if you count the other two tests I’ve taken. Six lines; three positive results.

“I just don’t believe it,” I whisper, my eyes misted over with tears. “I… I…”

My voice trails off, or rather, gets caught in my throat. Three pregnancy tests, and I still don’t fully believe it. It’s as if I spent so many years thinking that it was borderline impossible to conceive that even now, as I’m staring down at all of the positive results, part of me thinks it must be some kind of fluke.

But it’s not. Everything makes sense; the nausea, the mood swings, and now the positive tests.

I’m pregnant. I’m really, truly pregnant.

With Karl’s baby.

I don’t hesitate for even a second before I’m lunging for my phone on the sink. I navigate to Karl’s contact with trembling fingers, my thumb hovering over the call button. He needs to know. Despite everything, he deserves to know that we’re going to have a baby.

But then, just as I’m about to hit call, there’s a knock on the door.

“Hey, Abbs?” Chloe’s voice comes through the thick wood. “Hey, you in there?”

Shit. I quickly shut off my phone and slip it into my pocket, then shove the pregnancy tests and the box into the bathroom cupboard. When I fling open the door, breathless and my cheeks flaming red, Chloe is standing there with a confused expression on her face.

“Hey, I was gonna ask—holy shit,” she says when she sees me. “Are you okay? You look like you just saw a ghost.”

I swallow, smoothing down my hair. Chloe can’t know; not right now, at least. I need a little time to think, to process what’s happening.

“Yeah, I’m fine,” I manage. “Just, uh… started my period.”

But it’s too late. Chloe’s eyes flicker past me and catch something that I don’t see. She gasps and shoves past me, stooping down in front of the cupboard to pick something up: a pregnancy test that fell out while I was frantically trying to hide the evidence.

“Chloe, I—”

“Holy shit,” she breathes, turning to face me. “Abby, you’re pregnant? How?!”

“Shh!” I shush her, turning around to quickly shut the door before the others hear. “Yes, I’m pregnant.”

“Abby, this is huge,” Chloe whispers. “Oh my god, did you talk to Karl? I mean, I’m assuming it’s Karl’s baby…”

I nod and run my hands through my hair. “It is Karl’s baby,” I say quietly. “But no, I haven’t talked to him yet. I was just about to…”

“Abby, you need to talk to him.”

“I know.” I straighten up a bit. “And I will, in my own time. And Chloe, until then, you have to promise me that you won’t tell a soul. Not even Leah.”

Chloe nods. “Of course. You have my word.”

I let out a breath I didn’t realize I was holding. In that moment, our gazes meet. Chloe’s eyes slowly begin to crinkle at the corners. Before I know it, we’re both laughing out loud, jumping for joy and throwing our arms around each other.

“Oh my god, I’m having a baby,” I whisper-shout. “I can’t believe it, Chloe. It’s like a dream come true. No; it is a dream come true.”

Chloe pulls away, wiping tears of joy out of her eyes. “And I’m gonna be an auntie,” she says softly. But then her tone grows serious. “As for you and Karl…”

“I know what you’re going to ask,” I say. “And my answer is: I don’t know. I don’t know what I want, whether I want to take the single mom route or get back together with him. But… I promise I’ll talk to him. Sooner, rather than later.”

“Good. It’s the right thing to do,” Chloe says gently.

I’m just about to open my mouth to respond when the intercom connected to the private rooms suddenly buzzes to life.

“Chef Abby and staff, please report to the kitchen.”

“Whew. I am beat,” John says, wiping the sweat off of his brow with his towel as we wrap up for the day. “What a long day.”

I nod and stifle a yawn. It has been a long day; longer than the others even realize. All except for Chloe, of course.

The day started out on an emotional note, of course, when I discovered that I was pregnant. Following that, before I could even process the news, my team and I made our way to the kitchen for several hours of prep work for tomorrow’s gala.

With over two dozen recipes to cook tomorrow, many of which will require long-term preparation such as dough rising, vegetables pickling and meat marinating, we’ve got our work cut out for us.

“Yeah. I’m ready for bed,” Daisy yawns.

“Let’s all head back to our rooms. Pizza’s on me tonight,” I say. My team cheers at the idea of greasy, delicious pizza; except for Chloe, who grins at me silently. We’re not just celebrating a long day of good work.

We’re celebrating a new life.

But I’m not sure if I’m going to tell anyone just yet. I want to talk to Karl first, I think. As the father of my baby, I’d like to share this moment with just him before I share it with the others.

If only the thought of hearing his voice didn’t break my heart.

As we all file out of the kitchen to head back to our rooms, I’m suddenly stopped by a tap on the shoulder. I turn, seeing Edgar, the butler, standing behind me.

“Miss Abby,” he says. “May I have a word?”

I nod and follow Edgar back into the kitchen. It’s when we’re back under the bright lights that I see that he’s got a bag in his hands; there’s a designer logo on it, and white tissue paper sticking out of the top.

He holds the bag out to me. “Prince Damon has requested for you to attend the gala tomorrow whenever possible,” he says as I gingerly take the bag. “He has purchased you something to wear, but wants you to know that if it’s not to your liking, he will happily purchase something else.”

I furrow my brow a bit at the sudden generosity—although, not that it’s all that sudden, really. Damon has been nothing short of doting since I’ve gotten here.

But the thought of attending the gala, in a gown purchased by a man who’s clearly into me, especially after finding out that I’m pregnant with my ex-husband’s baby… I’m not so sure if that’s a good idea.

“Oh, um… I appreciate the offer,” I say, holding the bag back out, “but I think it would be best if I stayed with my staff during the gala. Tell him I say thank you, though.”

Edgar frowns and doesn’t take the bag. “I’m afraid it’s non-negotiable, Miss Abby,” he says in that cordial tone of his. “You must attend. The Prince insists.”

I swallow, slowly lowering the bag. “Oh. You’re sure?”

“Positive,” Edgar says. “Once the food preparations are complete tomorrow, you may return to your quarters; the Prince will have a stylist waiting for you. After that, he would like you to attend the gala, if only for an hour.”

“Alright,” I say slowly. It’s not exactly what I was hoping for, but it seems as though I don’t have much of a choice. “Thank you, Edgar.”

“Don’t thank me. Thank Prince Damon when you see him tomorrow.”

With those final strange words, I slip out of the kitchen and follow my team, who have already put quite a lot of distance between us, down the corridor.

And as I look down and peer into the bag, luxurious, shimmering fabric shines up at me.
