Chasing His Kickass Luna Back Chapter 378
Abby
After hanging up with Chloe and Leah, I roll over on the bed, looking up at the now-dark sky through the large open window. It’s so easy to see the stars here; maybe they’re even more visible than they are back in Karl’s pack territory.
But before I have the chance to get up and cross over to the window to look out, there’s a knock on the door.
I quickly get up and open the door to find a servant standing there, holding a small silver tray with an envelope on it.
“For you, miss,” she says, curtsying slightly.
I furrow my brow and take the envelope. “For me?”
“Yes, miss. It’s from Prince Karl.”
As the servant walks away, I narrow my eyes and turn the envelope over in my hand. Why would Karl be sending me letters via servant like this when he could just talk to me? Either way, I open it and scan its contents.
“Abby, meet me in the garden out back at midnight. Don’t be late! -Karl”
A soft laugh escapes my lips as I read the letter. He must be up to something, and maybe that’s why he’s been gone for the past few hours. I can’t help but wonder what it is as I slip into a flowy dress and step out of the room.
When I step outside into the dark garden, the ocean breeze hits me and ruffles my hair. The moon and stars seem to illuminate the ground, making my path easy to follow as I walk along the pebbles and step between the tall hedges.
Up ahead is when I see it: a small candle flickering on the ground with another note beside it. Furrowing my brow, I lean down and read the note: “Follow the maze.”
I do just that. The candle and note are situated at the beginning of a tall hedge maze, the hedges dotted with the occasional flower. I bite my lip as I begin to slowly navigate the maze, my heart beating faster and faster with anticipation.
“Which way…” I mutter to myself as I come to a fork in the path.
I turn this way and that, trying to decide on left or right, and then it hits me; a soft scent on the breeze, familiar and comforting. Karl. A slight giggle escapes my lips as I begin following the scent, and soon, I’m picking up my pace and letting the scent guide me entirely.
Before I know it, the path is twisting and turning until I’ve lost all sense of direction. If I didn’t have Karl’s scent to guide me, I would be completely lost by now.
But then the scent fades on the wind. Have I taken a wrong turn somewhere?
I stop, catching my breath as I turn around again to try and reorient myself.
“Abby…”
My head whips around, giggling, as the sound of a soft whisper in Karl’s voice catches my attention on the breeze, ruffling the hairs on the back of my neck. But my smile fades when I don’t see anyone standing there.
“Karl?” I call out.
There’s no answer. I knit my eyebrows together, my heart pounding, as I keep turning to see if he’s hiding somewhere.
And then I see the candle flickering on the ground up ahead.
As I follow the candle, though, I see that it’s not just one; there are dozens lining the path, and in between them are scattered rose petals on the ground. My breath catches in my throat as I slowly begin walking through the path of candles and rose petals.
“Karl?” I call out again.
“Abby… This way…”
His voice seems closer now, more tangible as I follow the path. My heart begins to pound harder and harder with each step, and I pick up the skirt of my dress as I continue.
The further I walk, the more something else comes to my attention: the soft sound of violin music warbling over the hedges. It’s soft and sweet, like something out of a fairytale, and I let the sounds guide me.
Finally, the music becomes so loud that I’m certain that I’m close. And, as it turns out, I am. I round one last corner, and there he is.
“Karl.”
“Abby.”
He’s standing in a small clearing, surrounded by rose bushes and flickering candles. Behind him is a small gazebo upon which a lone violinist is playing a beautiful classical piece. Karl holds his arms open to me, and I jog up to him, giggling in his embrace.
“What’s all this?” I breathe into the warmth of his neck.
Karl smiles down at me and begins to sway to the music as he holds me. “Oh, I just wanted to surprise you,” he murmurs.
“Well, you certainly achieved that.” I tilt my head back to look up at him, only to find that he’s already gazing down at me with so much love in his eyes that it makes my breath catch again. He gently dips his head down to press a soft, warm kiss to my lips.
Our lips part against one another as the kiss deepens. I feel his tongue carefully dart into my mouth, swirling around mine and causing me to shiver.
When we pull away, I’m completely breathless. No words will come; all I can do is press my hands against his chest as I try to steady myself, and let him sway me along to the violin music.
Together, we slowly tilt our heads up to look at the sky. The stars are twinkling overhead as though in time with the music, like a celestial performance just for us.
Suddenly, a gasp escapes my lips and I point as I see something yellow streak across the sky.
“A shooting star!” I whisper.
Karl grins. “Did you make a wish?” he asks.
I nod. “I did.”
“What was it?”
“If I told you,” I say, a smirk tugging at the corners of my lips, “then it wouldn’t come true.”
“You know I would make all of your wishes come true,” Karl says softly, leaning down to pepper more kisses across my nose and cheeks.
I can’t help but blush. This all feels like so much, and part of me almost begins to wonder… But no… It can’t be.
There’s a long silence as we keep swaying to the soft violin music. I close my eyes and lean my head against Karl’s firm chest, reveling in his warmth and comfort.
“You know, it’s hard to believe that we were apart for so long,” I find myself murmuring. “And now here we are, dancing to violin music in a rose garden, expecting a new addition to our family.”
Karl lets out a soft, contented sigh and rests his cheek on the top of my head. “Yeah. It is hard to believe.” He then pauses and lifts his head again, this time placing a cool, steady hand beneath my chin to lift my gaze as well.
“Karl…”
“Abby,” he says softly, “I’m never going to mess up our love again. You know that, right?”
My heart skips a beat. “P-Promise?” I whisper, my voice ragged with anticipation.
Karl licks his lips, smiles, then draws in a deep breath. “I’ll do you one better.”
Before I can answer, Karl is suddenly stepping back and… dropping to one knee. A choked gasp escapes my throat as I watch him reach into his pocket and pull out a small, velvet box.
“Karl, what are you—”
“Abby,” Karl says softly, carefully lifting the box in his palm. “I’ve spent so long wanting to redo things. Wanting a fresh start with you, another chance. And here, in this place, with so much ahead of us, it feels like… Like we could start over again.”
“Karl…”
“But there’s more to a fresh start than a new home and a promise,” Karl continues as he slowly opens the box to reveal a sparkling diamond ring. “Abby, will you marry me?”
My heart pounds so hard in my chest that it drowns out everything else. Suddenly, it’s as if nothing else exists; no maze, no rose bushes, no violinist, no ocean waves. Just me, Karl, and a diamond ring catching the light of the stars.
Without a word, I lean down and cup his face in my hands, kissing him deeply. And when we finally pull apart after what feels like an eternity, a single word escapes my lips like a breath.
“Yes.”
