Abby

The reception hall is cast in a warm, romantic glow, with twinkling lights and the warm flickering of candles on every table. Soft music plays as Karl and I make our entrance, hand-in-hand to raucous applause and cheers from our guests. I can’t stop smiling as we wave to our loved ones gathered all around us.

As we walk toward the dance floor, the DJ announces our entrance over the speakers. The music slows and softens, and an old song begins to play; a song that I haven’t heard in a long, long time.

“This is our song,” I murmur, turning toward Karl with wide eyes.

Karl grins down at me, reaching up to brush my cheek gently with the back of his hand. “I wanted to surprise you,” he says. “I hope you don’t mind a little repetition of old history.”

“Of course I don’t mind.”

“Perfect,” he says. “May I have this dance?”

I giggle, draping my arms over his broad shoulders. “You may.”

As we sway together on the dance floor, caught up in our own private bubble despite the swirl of activity around us, I can’t help but think back on old memories we once shared together to this song.

Karl’s fingers trace lazy circles at the small of my back as we move in sync to the music. In this moment, it feels like no one else exists except for the two of us.

“Do you remember the first time we danced to this?” I whisper.

Karl chuckles. “Of course I do,” he murmurs, his palm encircling my hand as we sway together. “How could I forget?”

A slight blush tinges my lips as I think back on that night; it was just a few weeks before our first wedding, and we had been taking dancing lessons in preparation for our first dance. Many nights were spent in the dance studio, grumbling over sidesteps and spins.

“I used to step on your toes all of the time,” I laugh.

“And I used to have a terrible habit of spinning you too hard, so you got dizzy,” Karl adds.

Everything had begun to come together, though, when our dance instructor put on this song that we’re dancing to now; a slow, romantic classical piano piece. I still remember how the sweet notes floated up into the air of the dance studio, and how it was as if everything just… clicked.

We wound up dancing to that song at our first wedding. And now, at our second wedding, we’re dancing to it again.

“You know, I keep telling myself that everything will be different this time,” I say, gently resting my head on Karl’s chest. “But maybe not everything needs to be different.”

Karl smiles and kisses the top of my head. “Maybe it’s okay for history to repeat itself; when it comes to the sweeter things, at least.”

The song ends too soon, and Karl presses a lingering kiss to my forehead before we part ways. As I make my way to the bridal table, Chloe materializes at my side and pulls me in for a tight hug.

“Well?” she asks. “How does it feel to be a bride again?”

“It feels… amazing,” I admit, blushing. “Everything feels like it’s finally fallen into place.”

Chloe smiles at me, and I can see a slight pinkish tinge to her own cheeks as well; behind her, off a ways, Logan watches her as he leans against the bar. Our eyes connect, and he offers me a slight smile and a wave.

“So,” I tease, nudging her with my elbow, “when’s your wedding?”

Chloe’s blush deepens. “Hey, take it easy…”

The next couple of hours pass in a whirlwind of conversation, laughter, and dancing with my bridesmaids and friends. Chloe, Leah, and I soon find ourselves on the dance floor, moving along to pop songs and laughing over each other’s stupid dance moves.

As the music shifts to a slow ballad, I feel a familiar pair of strong arms circle my waist from behind.

“There’s my beautiful wife,” Karl’s deep voice rumbles in my ear, sending shivers down my spine. He spins me around to face him, our bodies swaying in time to the soft music.

I gaze up at him, a smile tugging at the corners of my lips. “I like hearing you call me your wife again.”

“You’d better,” he murmurs huskily. “Because you’re stuck with me now. Forever.”

Our lips meet in a lingering, passionate kiss. I’m vaguely aware of a few catcalls and wolf whistles from our tipsy friends, but I couldn’t care less. I’m living in my own dream come true, and nothing else matters.

We part eventually, both a little breathless from our kiss. I rest my head on Karl’s chest, inhaling the sweet scent of his cologne as we dance.

That’s when my gaze lands on a familiar figure across the room.

Gianna.

My stomach plummets into an abyss as she meets my eyes and starts walking towards me. I knew that she would be here with Ethan, and I’ve seen her in passing, but she’s headed straight for me. And considering the fact that we haven’t spoken since the press conference, I’m not sure how this will go.

Karl must sense my unease, because his arms tighten around my waist protectively. “Don’t worry,” he says softly. “She won’t start anything.”

I nod, expecting an awkward encounter at the least. But then something entirely unexpected happens. As Gianna reaches us, her face breaks out into a genuine smile. She takes my hands in hers, giving them a gentle squeeze.

“Abby, you look absolutely beautiful,” she says. “I’m so happy for you both.”

My eyes widen. “You—”

“I know, I know,” she says with a small sigh. “And I don’t blame you for being wary. But really, Abby, I’m happy for you.” She glances over at Karl. “For both of you.”

Fresh tears well up in my eyes at her kind words after all the animosity between us. After everything, after the divorce and the arguments and the cruel plots, something seems to have changed. For the better, this time.

Without hesitation, I pull her into a warm hug. I feel her stiffen against me, out of surprise rather than animosity, before she relaxes slightly. “Thank you, Gianna,” I murmur into her hair. “That means more than you know.”

She hugs me back tightly before pulling away with a wistful smile. No more words need to be said between us. A new understanding has come over us, allowing us both to move forward. We may not be friends—and we likely never will be—but we don’t hate each other anymore.

And that’s all I could ask for.

As Gianna slips back into the crowd, Karl comes up to me and loops his arm around my waist. “What was that about, my love?” he asks, nodding his head toward where Gianna disappeared to.

I shake my head with a contented smile. “Just... letting go of the past, I guess.”

The evening wears on far too quickly. Before I know it, we’re sitting down for dinner. The reception hall fills with the sound of clinking cutlery and glasses, soft conversation, and speeches. I start to feel a bit tired, and lean back in my chair, resting my hand on my belly.

Suddenly, I feel a hand firmly grasp mine beneath the table and look over to see Karl grinning roguishly at me, a look of mischief in his eyes.

“Wanna get out of here?” he whispers.

My eyebrows raise all on their own. “What?”

Karl smirks. “Come on,” he says, tugging secretively on my hand. “Follow me.”
