Evelyn

I stood by the window of my hospital room, feeling the afternoon sunlight warm against my skin as I watched a nurse pack the last of my medical supplies into a bag.

After the initial critical period passed, the doctor insisted I stay for observation, and before I knew it, two weeks had gone by.

"Ready to go home, Evelyn?" Richard's deep voice drew my attention to the doorway.

I smiled at the sight of Devon's father. The Alpha King himself had come to escort me home—a gesture that spoke volumes about my place in the Hall family now.

"More than ready," I replied, reaching for my jacket only to have Richard take it and hold it open for me.

As I slipped my arms into the sleeves, I caught the concern in his eyes—concern mixed with something that looked remarkably like disappointment, though not directed at me.

"Devon wanted to come himself," Richard said, as if reading my thoughts. "I ordered him to finish the security protocols for the new lab first."

I nodded, understanding the unspoken message. Richard was displeased that his son hadn't protected me better. The old Alpha's eyes softened as they fell on the scar peeking out from my collar.

"You've endured enough pain for one lifetime, little wolf," he murmured, his weathered hand gentle on my shoulder.

The ride back to Hall's Mansion was quiet but comfortable. Richard didn't press me with questions or empty reassurances. Instead, he simply kept me company, occasionally pointing out changes in the city that had happened during confinement.

When we arrived at the mansion, I noticed something odd. Richard parked closer to the entrance than usual, and there was a strange lack of activity around the normally bustling household.

"Everyone's busy today," Richard said, his tone suspiciously casual. "Let me help you inside."

As we approached the front door, Lily suddenly poked her head out, grinning widely before ducking back in.

"Wait here a moment," Richard instructed, stepping inside and closing the door, leaving me standing alone on the doorstep.

"What in the world...?" I muttered.

Lily's voice carried through the door. "Evelyn! Wait until we say 'three, two, one,' then come in, okay?"

I had no idea what they were planning.

"Three! Two! One!" several voices chorused from inside.

I pushed open the door and was immediately showered with colorful streamers. Olivia stood in the foyer with a tray of small pastries, Emma and Mrs. Whitmore held a banner reading "Welcome Home!" and even Devon's normally serious brother Owen was present, a rare smile on his face.

"Welcome home, darling," Olivia said, setting down her tray to embrace me.

The lump in my throat made it hard to speak. "Thank you," I managed, my voice thick with emotion.

Lily bounced forward, throwing her arms around me. "I missed you so much! The house was so boring without you!"

"She's been moping around like a puppy," Emma added with a gentle smile. "We all have, really."

After the initial welcome, Lily attached herself to my side like a shadow. "I didn't visit as much as I wanted to," she explained as we settled in the library. "Finals are coming up, and Devon said I shouldn't distract you from healing."

"It's fine," I assured her. "How's the computer security course going?"

Lily's face lit up. "So much better! I got a B+ on the last assignment. Your tutorials really helped."

"B+?" I raised an eyebrow. "That's good, but I know you can do better." I pulled Lily toward Devon's office where there was a second computer. "Come on, I'm going to give you ten practice problems for network security protocols. If you're going to be my student, you can't just settle for good enough."

"But you just got home!" Lily protested, though she followed willingly enough. "Don't you need rest?"

"I've been resting for half a month," I countered, already typing out the problems. "Besides, I need to make sure you're ready for finals."

Devon found us an hour later as I was patiently explaining a complex encryption method while Lily took detailed notes.

"...so remember, the key exchange protocol is your foundation. If that's compromised, the entire system falls."

"But I thought the whole point was that the key gets split?" Lily asked, her brow furrowed in concentration.

"Exactly. That's why—" I paused as I noticed Devon leaning against the doorframe, a soft smile playing on his lips.

"Don't stop on my account," he said. "I'm enjoying watching the master at work."

Lily groaned dramatically. "She's a taskmaster is what she is! I just wanted to welcome her home, and now I'm doing practice problems."

"Ten of them," I confirmed without a hint of remorse. "And you'd better ace them, or there will be ten more."

Devon's smile widened. "That's my girl," he murmured, the pride in his voice unmistakable.

Later that evening, Devon found me alone on the back porch, gazing at the forest beyond. He approached quietly, but my heightened senses detected him immediately.

"Your recovery scent is strong," he said, standing close enough that I could feel his warmth. "The wound is healing well."

"Better than expected," I agreed, turning to face him.

Devon's eyes, dark and intense, searched my face before he pulled me into a deep kiss—our first since my injury. I melted against him, my body responding to his touch with a familiar heat that had been absent during my recovery.

When we finally broke apart, I whispered, "Take me to the forest. I want to be in nature."

Devon raised an eyebrow in surprise. "Are you sure you're ready?"

I nodded. "Something's different since the injury. I can feel my healing working faster than before. It's like... like my wolf is trying to reach me again."

In the forest, under the silver glow of the moonlight filtering through the trees, Devon stood behind me, his hands on my shoulders.

"Close your eyes," he murmured. "Listen to the forest. Feel the earth beneath your feet."

I obeyed, breathing deeply of the pine-scented air.

"I was eleven when I first shifted," Devon said quietly. "I was terrified. My wolf was so strong, and I felt like I was drowning in its power."

"What did you do?" I asked, eyes still closed.

"I learned to swim," he replied simply. "The wolf isn't separate from you, Evelyn. It's part of you. Don't fear it. Listen to it."

I concentrated, reaching deep within myself where my wolf had once been so vivid, so alive. For years, there had been only silence, a void where my wolf should have been. But now, faintly, I felt something—a stirring, like the flutter of wings.

"I can feel something," I whispered, excitement threading through my voice. "It's faint, but it's there."

Devon's arms encircled me from behind. "That's it. Don't push. Just listen."

For nearly an hour, we stood in the moonlight, me reaching inward while Devon supported me, his steady presence an anchor. Though I didn't shift—couldn't shift yet—I felt closer to my wolf than I had in years.

Finally, exhausted but elated, I turned in Devon's arms. "Thank you," I said softly.

Devon's fingers traced my cheek. "You'll get there. I know you will." His eyes grew serious. "Evelyn, when you're fully healed, after the next full moon—"

I placed a finger against his lips. "I know. We'll complete the mate bond then."

"One lunar cycle," I said, a teasing smile playing on my lips. "Think you can handle the wait, Mr. Hall?"

Devon growled playfully, pulling me closer. "You're testing my patience, little wolf."

Under the watchful moon, our lips met again, sealing a promise of what was to come. This time, I felt hope—not just for my recovery, but for my future. A future with Devon, with my wolf, with the family that had welcomed me home.
