Devon

The Portland conference room felt like a cage. My father, Richard, sat across from me, his weathered face set in stone as I presented my solution to the territory dispute with the humans.

"Negotiation is our best option," I said firmly. "We establish clear boundaries without bloodshed."

My father's laugh was cold. "Negotiation? With humans stealing our ancestral lands?" He slammed his fist on the table, making the other pack representatives flinch. "The weak have no bargaining power, Devon. You should know that by now."

The meeting ended with a compromise neither of us liked. As we moved to the hotel bar, I noticed a woman approaching – tall, blonde, with eyes that assessed me like prime real estate.

"Devon," my father called, voice deceptively casual. "Meet Laura Matthews. I've arranged for her to be your companion at the Hall Enterprise anniversary celebration."

I stiffened. "You did what?"

Laura extended her hand, smile perfectly practiced. "It's a pleasure, Mr. Hall. I've heard so much about you."

Ignoring her, I turned to my father. "I have the right to choose my own mate."

My father's eyes flashed gold – a warning. "You're thirty-five, Devon. Still unmated." He gestured at the watching pack representatives. "An Alpha without a mate has no right to rule. Disputes like today's will only multiply."

I stood abruptly, chair scraping against the floor. "This discussion is over."

"Take Laura home," my father called after me as I headed for the door. "Think about your future, son. Think about the pack."

But I wasn't listening anymore.

I was twenty minutes into the drive back to Evelyn's apartment when it hit me – a burning sensation coursing through my veins, my skin feeling like it was on fire. My vision started to blur as I white-knuckled the steering wheel.

"Damn it," I growled, realization dawning. "The alcohol was drugged."

My father's game was clear. The drug would heighten my instincts, push me toward the woman he'd chosen. A political mating to strengthen alliances.

But instead of Laura's face, all I could see was Evelyn. Silver-gray eyes, rare white wolf energy calling to something primal in me. The drug wasn't directing me toward my father's choice – it was enhancing the mate bond I'd been fighting to control.

"Must... see her," I groaned, my wolf clawing at my consciousness.

The car filled with my scent – pure Alpha dominance gone wild. In the rearview mirror, my eyes had turned golden, pupils vertical like a wolf's.

I forced the car forward, hands shaking. When I finally reached Evelyn's apartment building, my control was hanging by a thread. The elevator ride was torturous, her scent growing stronger with each floor.

When she opened her door, wearing simple jeans and a t-shirt that somehow made her look more beautiful than any woman I'd seen, I pushed inside without a word, locking it behind me.

"Evelyn..." My voice was barely human.

I grabbed her, my mouth finding hers in a desperate kiss. Every cell in my body screamed she was mine. My hands moved to her clothes, tearing at the fabric before a last shred of sanity broke through the haze.

I saw the surprise in her eyes, the confusion. With monumental effort, I stepped back.

"I've been drugged," I managed. "I'm sorry."

I stumbled to the bathroom, locking the door behind me. I needed to regain control before I did something unforgivable.

Evelyn

I stood frozen in my living room, lips still burning from Devon's kiss. What had just happened? One moment I was alone, the next Devon was here, eyes golden with wolf hunger, hands desperate on my body.

The strange part? Despite my shock, something within me had responded. A part I thought long buried – my wolf – had stirred at his touch, wanting more. It was terrifying and exhilarating at once.

A groan from the bathroom interrupted my thoughts.

"Devon? Are you okay in there?" I called hesitantly.

"Just... dealing with the effects," came his strained reply. "Give me a minute."

My face burned as it dawned on me what Devon might be doing in there.

"I'll grab you some clothes," I mumbled, quickly retreating.

When Devon finally came out, his eyes were back to their normal blue, though they still held that intense look. We ended up sitting on opposite ends of my couch, maintaining a careful distance.

"You okay now?" I asked.

He was quiet for a moment before speaking. "I'm sorry about what happened. My father slipped me something at a business meeting. He's been... pushing certain traditional expectations."

I just nodded, not sure what to say.

"Evelyn," he continued, "I wanted to ask if you would accompany me to the Hall Enterprise anniversary celebration."

The request surprised me. "Your father... would he be there?" I asked carefully. "Our relationship... perhaps it should remain private for now."

Devon studied me. "My father rarely attends business functions anymore. He won't be there." He paused. "Why don't you want us to be public?"

I chose my words carefully. "If I'm ever going to stand beside you openly, I want to do it as your equal - when I'm as strong as you."

Devon pulled me into his arms, and I felt his chest rise and fall with a deep breath.

Leaning against his chest, I couldn't stop thinking: 'If I got my wolf back... maybe then I'd actually deserve to be with him.'

A knock at the door interrupted us. Devon released me reluctantly, and I went to answer.

My brother Ethan stood in the hallway, his surprise evident when Devon appeared behind me.

"Mr. Hall," Ethan said, eyes flashing briefly with wolf light. "What are you doing at Evelyn's apartment?"

Devon's posture shifted subtly, stance widening – an Alpha asserting dominance.

"I came to pick up Evelyn," Devon replied, voice level but authoritative.

I jumped in quickly. "He just came by for some files," I explained, noticing Ethan's calculating gaze.

"Evelyn has no wolf now," Ethan said pointedly to Devon. "I'm not sure friendship with an Alpha is appropriate for her."

The tension between them was palpable, the air thick with hostility. I stood between two wolves whose instincts were clearly telling them to fight – over me.
