One morning, I was startled awake by the sound of something being smashed!

"Who locked the hallway? Break it open!" A man's voice came through.

The elevator had stopped working last month—since this city had never experienced minus thirty degrees, they feared malfunctions.

Then came the sound of axes hitting the door. My heart sank. So people were starting to rob supplies now?

"Listen up there! Now everyone needs to unite. If you have supplies, bring them out for unified distribution. That way no one in the building will starve!"

Was robbery now being justified so righteously, with morality completely collapsed? From the group chat, I knew every building had robberies now. Those who didn't comply might already be dead.

Thinking about my mountain of supplies inside, with just Emma and me...

The iron chain rattled loudly from the beating.

I got Emma settled. She started boiling water.
