After My Heart Died, I Became My Ex-Husband's Obsession Chapter 9
On our wedding day, I waited in the bridal suite for hours.
I was told my parents' car had broken down on the highway.
That day, Cole held my face and comforted me.
He said his parents were my parents now. Even if my father couldn't make it, his father would walk me down the aisle.
Later, I found out the car hadn't broken down at all.
His family had deliberately set up tables at a completely different hotel and "hosted" all my relatives there to keep them away from the main event.
Cole knew about it the entire time.
"Mom, go rest. I'll watch him."
After sending my parents away, I was alone in the room with Cole.
I knew he was awake.
"Your fever is gone. If you don't have the energy to drive tomorrow, call your driver to pick you up."
I stood up to leave, but he grabbed my arm weakly.
"Nina, I know I was wrong. I already fired Chloe. I blocked her everywhere. I... cough, cough!"
I had heard rumors about Chloe being fired.
I even saw a video of her making a scene in his office lobby, screaming until she had a panic attack and was taken away by an ambulance.
"Cole, let me say this one last time. Chloe or no Chloe, it doesn't matter. What matters is that I find you repulsive."
Mentally and physically, he made me sick.
He struggled to sit up, his voice raspy.
"I know, you hate that I got the tattoo. It's okay... Nina, I'll show you I'm serious."
On the nightstand, there was a plate of apples my mother had sliced and a small fruit knife.
I watched as he grabbed the knife.
He started slashing at the nebula tattoo on his ribs, turning the skin into a bloody mess.
"Nina, I'm begging you."
Sweat poured down his face.
He fell off the bed, dragging his weak legs, and kneeled beside me.
His bloody hand stained my clothes.
"We aren't getting divorced. I don't want to divorce you."
Facing his desperate begging, I stepped back in disgust.
I brushed the imaginary dust off my clothes.
"Cole, if you lose too much blood and think you're going to die, call 911 yourself. Don't die in my house. It's bad luck."
Watching my retreating figure, he slowly lowered his eyes, staring blankly at the knife in his hand.
Before dawn, Cole drove away silently.
Shortly after he left, the storm intensified.
At 10:29 AM, I received a call from an unknown number.
"Hello, is this Ms. Nina, wife of Cole Jenkins? This is the State Central Hospital ER. Your husband was in a severe car accident on the interstate. He is in critical condition. Please come immediately!"
Listening to the urgent voice on the phone, my gaze remained fixed on the storm raging outside the window.
The night I had my miscarriage, after calling 911, I had called Cole in agonizing pain.
He picked up right before it went to voicemail.
I cried and begged him to come home, telling him my stomach had never hurt so much.
He was at a pointless dinner party. I could hear Chloe’s bell-like laughter in the background.
When he heard I called an ambulance, he swore at me through his drunken haze.
"Nina, give it a rest! It's just a stomach ache, you aren't giving birth! You're so dramatic, calling an ambulance for nothing. Stop crying! I'm busy."
"Hello? Ms. Nina? Are you listening?"
The doctor on the other end repeated Cole’s critical status.
I smiled.
I spoke calmly.
"I'm sorry, you have the wrong number."
...
One year later, I received the final divorce decree from the court.
I didn't spare a single glance at Cole, who was sitting in a wheelchair, looking gaunt and withered.
I was too busy excitedly discussing which restaurant to celebrate at with my lawyer.
Just as we were about to get in the car, a faint meow caught our attention.
It was a small, snow-white stray cat, very friendly.
Thinking of the massive settlement I had just received, my lawyer laughed.
"They say cats bring fortune. Looks like it's true."
Laughing, I found a cardboard box.
After putting the kitten inside, I tapped its nose gently.
"From today on, your name is 'Hope'."
Hope seemed to understand me.
The fluffy little thing let out a loud, powerful meow, full of promise for the future.
